@sentdefender So now Donald Trump is taking orders from both Netanyahu and a bunch of Middle East countries. When do Americans citizens who voted get to have a say in all of this? I am asking on behalf of 152 million American voters.

The United Arab Emirates, supported by Bahrain and Kuwait, is pushing hard for U.S. President Donald J. Trump to order a ground invasion of Iran, as officials from many Gulf allies of the United States, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE, have conveyed in private conversations that they do not want the ongoing military operation to end until there are significant changes in the Iranian leadership or there’s a dramatic shift in Iran’s behavior, diplomatic officials tell the Associated Press.

@KenGardner11 @Doranimated LOL; "we." "We" have no input whatsoever. Maybe we should consider the HUGE middle ground between "bomb them into the stone age" and "leave them alone to build a nuke." HUGE.

The IRGC's strategy is to absorb so many blows from Israel that the Israelis will collapse from sheer exhaustion. On Sunday, dozens of Israeli Air Force jets hit weapons infrastructure across Tehran. More than 120 munitions were dropped in a single wave. Targets included: * Facilities developing key ballistic missile components * An IRGC complex working on missile systems and satellite launchers * Sites producing weapons for the Iranian army Missile storage and launch sites were also hit, along with air defense systems.

@ddtmatter @KenGardner11 “Radical” and “Militarily Effective” don’t correlate. At all. The Iraqis had their elite troops too, for all it mattered.

Iraqi conscripts are not the same as the radical Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. An international, UN-backed coalition united against an invading country is not the same as a unilateral US-Israeli conflict led by a leader that much of the world dislikes. A relatively flat desert land of 438,000 sq km is not the same as one of 1.65 million sq km with complex terrain and natural mountainous barriers. Conventional armaments like easily targeted tanks and artillery are not the same as missiles, drones, naval swarms, mines, and proxies that attack from all sides. Desert Storm was fundamentally different in scale, scope, and motivation. This is a radically different situation, far more like the subsequent Iraq War but with even more challenges.

Just a random memory from Desert Storm: we bombed the hell out of the Iraqi military for around a month. On the first day of ground operations, the vast majority of them immediately surrendered. The enemy talks a lot of shit, but in the end they're all human.

@ByOtherMeansX @ratlpolicy McFaul is the textbook example of the leftist trope, “I just don’t understand.” Invincible ignorance as a method of reasoning.

@ratlpolicy I don't understand these takes from accomplished people such as Amb. McFaul, who are well-versed in vital U.S. national interests. I expect there would be applause if U.S. ground forces were introduced to Ukraine rather than Iran.

@Mark__Mazur @MolinesPinto @aziz0nomics Over 1/3 of 1914 Germany is not Germany now. Millions of them were ethnically cleansed in 1945-1946. Where are the German suicide vests, tunnels, and Intifadas, and their calls for right of return?

Violence interrupters are a classic case of the difficulty of scaling good pilots. I believe it works with entrepreneurial leaders supported by world class researchers. The benefits seem unclear when rolled out to replacement-level bureaucrats
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

Even a lot of the better politicians in DC have disturbing levels of faith in "violence interruptor" programs that are at best unproven … not really sure where the appeal of this comes from.

You might want to brush up on your international law before calling it illegal. In his book, De Iure Belli ac Pacis, Grotius, the founder of international law, makes it clear that any nation that has been the victim of aggression can seize such territory from an aggressor to ensure he is incapable of again launching such an aggression. This principle governed many redrawing of borders over the last centuries or two. In Lebanon’s case, its territory has consistently been used since 1948 to attack Israel without provocation. Four times (1948, 1978, 1982, 2006) has Israel, including in 1948, has Israel needed to seize territory up to the Litani River to reverse the aggressions and forestall future ones. Four times (1948, 1978, 1999, 2006) has Israel left the territory to the original, verified Sykes-Picot border line, only to find itself subject to renewed aggressions. After five times, it stands to reason Grotius’ principles can be applied.
Steve Hanke@steve_hanke

In an attempt to ANNEX southern Lebanon, Israel is now setting up fortifications & creating a so-called “buffer zone” between Israel & Lebanon. Israel is already ILLEGALLY occupying about 8% of Lebanon’s territory.

They would never get to the Israeli border alive, and if somehow they did they'd starve and run out of bullets. Do you have any idea what it takes to move that force that distance and sustain it? 10K tons of supplies/day absolute bare minimum for combat ops, that's if all of them are infantry. That scales up dramatically if you want fuel and munitions for your tanks, etc. Just how do you plan to move 20K+ tons/day from Iran to the Israeli border when the IDF has complete air superiority?

The 60% stuff, by far the scariest, was only accumulated starting in 2022. IAEA inspectors say that material, or the bulk of it, was at Isfahan as of last June, per the IAEA report of Feb 27. Since about half of the material was enriched between Feb and June last year, there would have been significant practical issues with dispersing the stuff in a lot of locations. No other location would have been more secure from attack or seizure. CIA and Mossad likely have a very good handle on location. The issue is getting it and getting it out.

@KenGardner11 @MistrrMax Maybe we do. Maybe we don't. It's a big damn place. Again, the size of Alaska. Not all the uranium was enriched all at once. It's been getting done over a course of years and it's what - about 900 pounds or so at 60 percent? They wouldn't put all their eggs in one basket.
