Worked 46 years in a factory to pay my home off , no one gave me anything. I paid taxes worked hard and raised my children. Some people like me could not afford to contribute to a retirement account all I have is the SS I paid in and small pension from my employer. I make do with what I have but it’s not easy to come up with the property taxes every year to keep what I have.

@detroitsux My husband’s aunt is selling his grandpa’s land to a developer to try to get $100k more than what we offered her. We have 3 sons that could keep the land within the family for at least 2 more generations but that potential extra money is enticing I guess

There are those who think that it’s good public policy to get seniors out of their family homes in order to “churn the market,” and make room for new home buyers. The problem with housing is that boomers want to have it both ways—that is, as a financial asset, but also as a sacred “home” they’re entitled to keep.
If you want the former, you need to pay your taxes. And if you want the latter, then it can’t be a financial asset.

I’m a Millennial. I’m also shocked at the replies I got when I suggested that the elderly shouldn’t have to sell their homes if they can’t pay inflated property taxes. It’s clear to me that people carry a deep hatred of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations.

@AndrewAzlan @ewarren So why can’t we acknowledge there is massive paper pushing in DC. Ai is literally awesome at scanning paperwork, putting the numbers against ridiculously convoluted tax code criteria and only having a human look at the tax returns worth messing with.
