Album of the day. Parade—Prince’s eighth album, his third and final with backing band The Revolution—turns 40 today. Doubling as the follow-up to 1985's colorfully brave Around the World in a Day and the soundtrack to the goofball tragicomedy, Under the Cherry Moon, which turned out to be a box office and critical flop upon its theatrical run in the summer of 1986, Parade stands as one of Prince's rangiest, if not finest works. It's a kaleidoscope of sounds and textures, casting a broad influence across its lush, eclectic stew of funk, psychedelia, jazz, folk, and baroque pop. Along with its well-executed sequencing and segues, it all happens to cohere beautifully, given the diverse musical ground it covers in its 45-minute running time. Opening with a brisk four-song suite Prince cut and rhythmically sequenced in one complete session, the album's mood is set: that is, anything can jump onto you, and it's still all funky and eccentric at once. Yes, “Kiss” and “Girls & Boys” shine here, but the true secret weapon is the expertly done string arrangements of Clare Fischer, which give Parade's sonic soundscape a uniquely European feel (“I Wonder U,” "Anotherloverholenyohead," "Do U Lie," “Venus de Milo”). One of the great masterpieces of the 1980s, an inventive avant pop-funk classic if there ever was one.

A hobo tried to steal my phone in East Village and ran after me tonight. I ran into the nearest pizza shop and the owner said he does this every night on the block. He wouldn’t go in the pizza shop cause the owner beat him last time he tried that. He just stared at me for 10 minutes through the window like he was ready to chase me if I went outside. Shop guy said he just got out of Rikers. For the last decade he’s been in and out of jail. Whenever he’s free he harasses people in Alphabet City. I called the cops but they couldn’t do anything other than rough him up and tell him to get lost. This guy and a few hundred people like him are terrorizing New Yorker’s and we let them roam free. At best they’re sent to Rikers for a few weeks before the DA drops charges. We need to throw people like this into prison and throw away the key. No more in-and-out no more social workers no more selling EBT for alcohol. These people can’t be fixed.
