Living in LA myself, and having friends in the industry, this chart does show that LA’s production industry is genuinely struggling. But the headline “Hollywood went Woke, now it’s going broke” is a post-hoc narrative grafted onto structural economic data. The real causes are AI, tax incentives, streaming contraction, labor strikes, disaster, and cost of living in LA…has nothing to do with the content of the stories being told.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ This chart’s baseline year is 2021 which was a post COVID production surge when everything delayed by the pandemic came flooding back at once, creating an artificially inflated peak. Using 2021 as the starting point is designed to make the drop look as dramatic as possible. The chart also measures Los Angeles production days, not total US or global production. Productions have been fleeing LA for years due to aggressive tax incentives offered by Georgia, New Mexico, the UK, Canada, and Australia. “Wokeness” is equally present in those productions, they just film elsewhere cheaper. The 2025 data point conveniently ignores that the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires early in 2025 directly disrupted production infrastructure, displaced crew members, and shut down shoots across the region. That’s in the data. Also, the writers’ and actors’ strikes halted production for months in 2023, which bleeds directly into 2024 and 2025 numbers. No scripts being written = no productions being filmed = fewer location days. That’s a labor dispute about pay and AI protections, not a referendum on progressive storytelling.

I have high confidence (75%) that President Trump will announce the end of the war in Iran tonight. That doesn’t mean imminent ceasing of hostilities, but a wind down. The reason is simple: anything else, especially a boots on the ground escalation, would make him look crazy in the eyes of a clear majority of investors and US elites. Not a little crazy, but “this is not funny anymore” crazy. Trump is highly susceptible to this specific crowd , and we have no reached the end of everyone’s patience. Why only 75% confidence ? Because the above should have been crystal clear and predictable 10 days ago . The fact that this war wasn’t ended sooner is a clear mistake - and when there is one mistake, the risk of a greater mistake rises significantly. However, the magnitude of this mistake is so large that I have high confidence this ends tonight. If not, I am off the Trump train and so will the largest share of everyone that matters. (Not that I matter 😉, just sayin’) At the same time, if it ends, most people will quickly forget this episode and move on to AGI and greater things, with very little damage to President Trump’s long term legacy.
