@hallsrh @ShadeNym @_utilitysports It’s tough because warriors, nuggets, bucks, Celtics all built championship teams without really tanking. Yet we see teams willing to do it for years and years

OKC has one top 5 pick on their roster The have destroyed other teams by making good decisions in free agency, the 2nd round, trades and non-top 10 picks They are the epitome of “hey, maybe the lottery isn’t the only way to build a winning team”
Sam Quinn@SamQuinnCBS

One of the unintended consequences of lottery reform is that I imagine it will entrench the Thunder and Spurs at the top. I’m not sure how teams post-reform are going to have any hope of assembling all of the young talent they were able to in order to really oppose them.

@RichHomieFlom Nah. There are bad teams that could be meh but they shit down players to be bad bad. Flattening odds would fix tanking but then it would make the league worse by giving good teams better players. I truly don’t think there is a perfect fix.

The biggest problem isn’t the bad teams being bad, which will always happen, it’s a bunch of “meh” teams outright tanking in February because even the 9th best lottery odds is infinitely more valuable than a useless play-in experience.

Simple tanking fix: 1. Unflatten the lottery odds: the worst teams are very likely to get top picks and mid-lotto teams are unlikely to move up. 2. Eliminate pick protections outside of top-4. 3. Can’t draft top five more than two years in a row or three in five years.

@NetsPressIG This idea creates even more tanking. Teams would have to try even harder to be bad. Which creates more tanking. I do like the can’t pick top 5 back to back years tho.

@McCadeP8 Yeah I see that. But also, sucks to suck. If you stink, you stay bad. Lose viewer ship, revenue, etc. May lead to management changes. It’d definitely need some type of adjustment too to mitigate your second note there. I’d rather see the “close” team benefit instead of the worst.

@ExStrategos @SamQuinnCBS Teams could want to extend and the player just goes, well LA will have cap space so I’ll leave. Teams want to extend and restricted fee agency is their only protection . At least for stars

@SamQuinnCBS Just get rid of restricted free agency. The teams that don’t care enough to extend the players should not get automatic rights to the player.

I think the silent issue that goes hand in hand with tanking reform is that the last few CBAs have quietly killed free agency. The rules make it way too easy to players to extend now. That kills the free agent talent pool and makes teams more reliant on tanking and the draft.

@MZavagno11 I think basketball is too different from football to achieve the same level of parity. So much of football is randomness (injuries, scarce possessions) while basketball does everything to filter out randomness (100 possessions per game, 82 game season, 7 game playoff series)

@steelo0607 @GS_NickB @BrettSiegelNBA Yeah no one is trying to get a 7 seed then possibly miss the playoffs in the play in. And you see how slow the east odds are. 7-10 seeds are like a game apart. And the players on a championship caliber team wouldn’t quit playing hard. If coach sits them, that team ain’t winning

@GS_NickB @BrettSiegelNBA Teams would be tanking out of the top 6, it’s a horrible idea. OKC could get to the 7th seed which would potentially get them a top pick and they could win the championship from the 7th seed.

@BrettSiegelNBA Just rotate picks each year, will completely eliminate tanking & is 100% fair. See below example for a team. Also will give each team a top 10 pick every 3 years 2026 - 7th Pick 2027 - 17th Pick 2028 - 27th Pick 2029 - 8th Pick 2030 - 18th Pick 2031 - 28th Pick 2032 - 9th Pick

@BrettSiegelNBA My thought is that the draft has become the only way to build a team. Teams will tank less if they're afraid of losing the players they have, especially if they draft a potential star. The cure to tanking could be equally strong free agency.

@Abigail4u2c @BrettSiegelNBA The good teams are better than ever though. The playoffs are an awesome watch. Or even 2 top level teams playing randomly. It’s the 12 teams that aren’t trying that is the problem. Season is too long tho and owners will never agree to shorten

@SkilledByChoice @DavidGraceJr @ShamsCharania Best players will have first dibs on best markets. Best markets are dictated opportunity for more exposure to earn more off the court, or to save on taxes (Florida, Texas) and weather. You will have absurb lopsided superteams in those markets.

@coachfeeny @ShamsCharania First option is too complicated because teams trade picks. Are you saying only 4 playoff teams per conference? NBA loses money. What do you mean by wheel? What do you mean able to sign with restrictions?

@DavidGraceJr @ShamsCharania The best one I’ve heard is trading picks with someone else. Someone mentioned eliminating playoff teams to 4 in each conference and that would be perfect, but not realistic. The wheel is an interesting concept. Being able to sign but with major restrictions is better too.

The NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors on Wednesday, with modifications expected to each before a formal vote in May, per ESPN sources. 1. 18 teams in draft lottery (seeds 7-15 in each conference) – flattened odds, with bottom 10 teams having an 8% chance, the remaining 20% odds distributed in decreasing order for 11 through 18, and and a lottery drawing for all 18 picks. 2) 22 teams in lottery using 2-year record (seeds 7-15, plus the four playoff first round exits in both conferences). Lottery teams would reach a minimum win total floor in each season, such as 25 wins. If a team falls short of the floor, it gets slotted to meet the floor. Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently. 3) 18 teams in a "5 by 5" lottery – bottom 5 teams have equal odds for the top pick, with lottery formed for picks 1-5. Bottom 5 teams have a floor at 10; those that fall out of top 5 get sorted in a separate drawing.

Ugh. Here we go again. Iowa is NOT a Cinderella. Iowa will never be a Cinderella. Why? Because Iowa has already been to the prom. Many times. Iowa plays in a conference of prom-goers. Iowa may have good years and bad years, but no one will ever be surprised if they show up at the prom.
