Another way to think about it is to ask which definition should be expanded. Should we expand programming to include all aspects of creating computer software, or should we expand engineering to include programming? The former makes more sense to me.

Programming vs engineering is an age old debate, and personally I draw the line between programming and engineering at the logic gates. I heard that from a guy at a bookstore a long time ago. But, I try not to argue about it because it gets pedantic.

@tonicesteve @cot5r @CynicalPublius Might help to study these men a little more before uttering their names, because Dwight Eisenhower specifically warned about the potential for public policy to "become the captive of a scientific-technological elite" which is exactly what is happening in Europe.

@cot5r @CynicalPublius I think that if George Marshall, Dwight Eisenhower, and others saw what you are turning the USA into, they would be horrified. But hey, it's your choice.

@CynicalPublius The source contradicts the note because it says that Visa and Mastercard were pressured into doing this, not doing it of their own desire to regulate their customers purchases.

I greatly enjoy the way idiots cannot tell the difference between a practice of a private company and government tyranny. Hilarious!

Let me explain the dangers of government-controlled digital currencies (for the benefit of our small-brained European cousins). Suppose you went to the liquor store last week and bought €100 worth of booze using the government-run digital currency on your iPhone. Today you went to the liquor store again and tried to buy €100 worth of booze using the government-run digital currency on your iPhone, but your transaction gets rejected. Why? Because some Eurotrash EU bureaucrat decided that it's unhealthy for you to buy so much liquor in such a short period of time, so you gets nothing. And you have no recourse, because you have become a serf whose life is at the discretion of the government. (As an aside, single-payer, government-funded healthcare will work in synchronicity with this, deciding what is best for you health-wise, because after all it's not fair that other citizens must pay for your cirrhosis and bad judgment.) You have been warned, Europe.

I dumped the Framework, then dumped the Razer. Now I am on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 13, which ... is actually pretty good? It is in theory much lower-powered than either previously-mentioned laptop, but in practice is tremendously better so far. I just want a 16-inch version of this that does not have a discrete GPU. But every 16-inch laptop I see has one of these horrible things. Any ideas? I would even settle for 15...

Anyone starting to think that Ms. McGrath isn't writing her own Tweets? This tweet about going green seems so clueless about basic gravimetric energy density. Gasoline's energy density is about 100 times greater than a lithium-ion battery. Sometimes this is acceptable, like in an electric car. But seems like it could be fatal on any real battlefield.

Army logistician here. FYI, science says it's impossible to make an armored fighting vehicle "green" unless you accept the fact that it will be unavailable for at least half a day, every day. War is a 24/7 endeavor. Which means U.S. soldiers die unnecessarily to be "green." So how about we prioritize the lives of our service men and women over a specious political con job about a so-called "green" military?

Super professional how they interviewed a world leader and forgot to bring a slate so they had the low paid (and most likely non-union) video tech/utility guy clap his hands in front of the world leader even tho sound should have been jamming timecode to the camera (but they're probably too cheap to do that) and somehow they thought it looked badass so they put it in the trailer even tho it makes them look like rank amateurs👍

This chart actually makes the exact opposite of its intended point, demonstrating that impeaching federal judges is exceedingly rare -- having only happened 15 times in history, and never more than 3x in a decade. There were no impeachments for a 50 yr period b/w 1930s-80s.
Justin Murphy@jmrphy

The NYT this morning criticized Elon Musk's call to impeach federal judges, accusing him of violating constitutional norms. Well, I looked into the data and it's insane: We stopped impeaching federal judges, despite having more of them now than ever! The impeachment rate now seems implausibly low. Either federal judges have become saints, or something is suppressing impeachments. What is the probability we'd observe zero impeachments from 2011-2024? Using the Poisson distribution, I think it's somewhere around 3-7% depending on how you do it. So it's very fishy. What's even crazier is that there is a clear political story behind all of this. The 1980 Judicial Conduct and Disability Act, signed by Jimmy Carter, gave judges the power to police themselves through an obfuscated multi-layer system where chief judges dismiss almost all the complaints and judicial councils choose confidential sanctions in most of the cases where they even admit wrongdoing occurred. Then in 2008 the federal judges "reformed" themselves, which seems to have made things even worse. I have to look into this more, obviously a complicated issue. But it seems that the NYT is wrong and Musk is right, we do need to impeach more federal judges. (I'll post a longer piece on this later.)
