@treeRockSand @katiejwoo Doesn't matter, you can't switch from one to the other. Katie even has the rule slightly wrong. You can't switch at all in the middle of an at bat unless runners advance. Declaring is about when you're in an ambiguous position.

@katiejwoo Yes, but he did it in reverse order of what you said. He was in windup, then switched back to stretch mid at bat.

If a pitcher begins an AB from the windup but wants to switch to pitching from the stretch (or vice versa), he must declare it to the umpiring crew or it's ruled an automatic balk. Sheehan pitched the first two from the stretch, but changed to the windup without declaring.
Matthew@MatthewR2415

@katiejwoo A rule? He was standing on the rubber about to deliver and nothing had happened yet. All of the sudden the umpires have to gather together for a few minutes to discuss what they think might have happened? What motion did he do that deceived the runners?

@noli_timere1 @44pers @JomboyMedia Sure, but a warning (unless you're talking official warnings for throwing at batters) has no teeth, and can be given in any sport. It does nothing to change the game like a tech or penalty does. Heck, an ejection of a coach doesn't directly affect the game.

@GarrettWebste13 @44pers @JomboyMedia Baseball is about managing the game to keep it moving & there can be warnings given prior to an ejection that are often enough to diffuse contentious situations, some times ejections are manufactured for theatrical to rile up their team. Could be an interesting stat to look at?

A's hitting coach gets ejected because the umpire let Michael Wacha throw a pitch right after putting away his broken chain

@wolph26 @KMWells33 @jonbecker_ Yes, but if they tag first, now the force is off. Ohtani probably gets out anyway, but it's no longer a force out so the runner just has to touch home before Ohtani is tagged and you tie the game.

@KMWells33 @jonbecker_ "Take off and the run scores". Bruh, look at where Ohtani is when the 2b gets the ball. Even if he threw to first and Ohtani took off. The 1b would throw to second way before Ohtani could reach it. Would've been a dp either way

@TJenkinsTampa @balkwhisperer @JomboyMedia I think I agree that we should generally have time in this case, but pitch clock does weird stuff, and I'm sure MLB has given a number of directives about the clock that we aren't privy to. Very possible that they've been told something that led to no time here.

@balkwhisperer @JomboyMedia I guess you could argue that it’s his fault for not being reasonably set, but the crux of that is that I think time should have been called. Idk weird situation.

@GoPats15 @JomboyMedia Like it or not, assistant coaches don't get any rope. They know that, it's the way baseball has been for a very, very long time. Although they don't always act like it, at that level of baseball everyone knows when an ejection is going to happen 80+% of the time.

Unless that coach dropped some certain word to get tossed, WTF is up with umps these days having skin the thickness of tissue paper? Seems like ANY criticism on a call they immediately toss a coach. I always remember tossing only after screaming heated arguments in each other’s face, maybe even physical contact…..

@44pers @JomboyMedia Pretty much all sports do. What makes baseball different is there is no intermediate discipline that an official can adminsiter. In basketball you get a tech first, football you get a flag. In baseball it's ejection or nothing.

@Bmoresports00 @BearFlagFan @ScoringChanges Both have access to important people. There is some miscommunication going on somewhere. MLB very, very rarely officially grades calls (other than balls and strikes), so I certainly wouldn't call either source authoritative.

MLB Scoring Changes
MLB Scoring Changes@ScoringChanges·
OK, I’m working a game tonight, so I just met with our umpires and asked them about the play (two have been MLB call-ups). All three, and our ABS tech, said the same thing. If any part of the ball was over the line, it’s a fair ball because it was inside the base. They said had it been a fly ball beyond the base and the first time it bounced, the physical ball was foul, but part of the ball hovered over the line, that would be foul, but assuming the umpire saw a part of the ball over the line, it was in fact a fair ball. Three umpires, two that are MLB call-ups, and a former umpire that is the ABS tech. They were all insistent that it was a fair ball, and they avoid social media (as they should). I just now showed the actual play to the ABS tech and he said that if part of the ball is over the line it’s fair. I do trust the umpires on this.

@Nate_Knows_Ball @BradM43 I'm far, far, far from the most knowledgeable draft guy. In fact, probably a little below average, so I was mostly thinking positions and looking at the obvious needs. Which, CB definitely was, but I trust their DB development. I was underestimating the waterfall effect

@GarrettWebste13 @BradM43 I watched every LSU game last year so I was already familiar with his game, but I was still surprised that’s they way they went. Didn’t hate it though

I understand the need/want for another difference maker at WR for the Chiefs, but I just can’t get behind the doom and gloom when our only loss on offense was the penalty machine at RT and we have a real NFL RB room now I just don’t see any way this offense isn’t better than ‘25

@AnalyticsSaidSo Wish we had this but just the high home angle. I think networks not using high home for good plays in the outfield is a crime.

@GarrettWebste13 Yes. His jumps/speed/routes to the ball are the best in the world. He frequently makes plays look routine-ish that very few players would even make a legitimate attempt at diving or trying to catch.

@filterofth74624 @BasebaIlKing I'm not going to say that I think the interference rule is perfect (though I'm also not sure how to change it to be better without introducing a ton of issues), but this is obviously intererence as the rules are written. I don't think the SS was trying to get a call.

@GarrettWebste13 @BasebaIlKing I disagree with the call for this reason. While intention is NOT required for interference (which the announcers are harping on) the fielder did not take a path to the ball and intentionally ran AT THE RUNNER to make it appear as if interference happened. The umpires got deeked
