Portugal's midfield was supposed to be their biggest strength.
Instead, it became their biggest tactical weakness. On paper, a trio of Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and João Neves should dominate games. In reality, they rarely did.
The biggest issue was role overlap. All 3 wanted to receive to feet rather than attack space. Vitinha excels at circulating possession, João Neves at covering ground and connecting phases, while Bruno thrives when he can roam into advanced pockets. None consistently occupied the spaces that destabilise defensive blocks.
As a result, Portugal had plenty of possession but very little control.
There's a difference.
Control is dictating where the game is played. Portugal simply recycled the ball without moving opponents. They struggled to progress centrally, forcing attacks wide before hopeful deliveries into the box.
Out of possession, the problems were even clearer.
The distances between the midfield and defensive lines were too large. Once the first line of pressure was beaten, opponents could drive straight through the middle. There was little protection in front of the centre-backs and too often Portugal found themselves defending while retreating instead of confronting.
Straight-line attacks became a recurring theme because there was no true holding midfielder anchoring the structure. João Neves covered enormous ground, but he isn't a positional destroyer in the mould of Rodri. Vitinha isn't one either. Bruno naturally jumps forward to press or hunt the ball.
The result?
One pass eliminated two or three midfielders.
Against elite opposition like Spain, that imbalance was exposed. Spain's midfield constantly manipulated Portugal's shape, pulled players out of position and eventually found the decisive breakthrough.
Portugal also created surprisingly little considering the talent available.
The midfield rarely broke lines with penetrative carries or vertical passing. They played around opponents more than through them. Cristiano Ronaldo was left isolated, while the wide players often received possession with defenders already set.
A great midfield must do three things:
• Control tempo.
• Create chances.
• Protect the defence.
Portugal's did none of them consistently. The names were elite. The profile balance wasn't.

The Azteca isn't the biggest story of this World Cup.
It's what happened around it. Hosting a World Cup isn't just about building or renovating a stadium. It's about creating an ecosystem that can move hundreds of thousands of people efficiently and safely.
-Roads.
-Metro.
-Airports.
-Security.
-Utilities.
-Broadcast infrastructure.
-Public spaces.
The Azteca became the anchor for wider investment across Mexico City, proving that sports infrastructure should never exist in isolation.
The smartest host nations don't build for 4 weeks. They build for the next 40 years.
That's the difference between an expense and an investment.
Emerging football nations should take note. The greatest World Cup legacy isn't the final. It's the infrastructure that continues serving citizens long after the fans have gone home.

You can take this any of two ways, as advice or warning.
I am cool with having conversations, including strong disagreements with any one here on these streets, even a little ribbing.
But once that crosses the line into insults, or disrespect, it’s straight up blocking. No warning. Just gone.
I like my TL clean, and free of badly-raised children who cannot disagree without needing black soap to wash it out

"Messi = Talent, CR7 = Hardwork" is a brain dead casual take. I guarantee 95% of the population can work as hard as CR7 & never even be as good as Garnacho. Cr7 is one of the most talented footballers of all time. The hardwork just ensured he didnt waste his talent like 60% of insanely talented footballers do.

One of the biggest managerial decisions of this World Cup belongs to Rudi Garcia.
Against Senegal, Belgium were 2-0 down. He looked at the pitch, saw that the dynamics weren't working and hauled off Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku before the hour mark. It was ruthless. It was also a message: reputation guarantees nothing.
Fast forward to the Round of 16. De Bruyne and Doku started on the bench against the USA. Not because Garcia doubted their quality, but because he trusted the game plan more than the names on the team sheet. When they came on, they attacked a tiring American side with fresh legs, superior decision-making and technical quality. The game tilted irreversibly in Belgium's favour as they ran out 4-1 winners. (Reuters)
Tactically, Belgium were outstanding. Garcia denied the USA what they thrive on: transition chaos. Belgium slowed the tempo in possession, circulated the ball patiently and forced the American midfield to chase. Every spell of sustained possession drained energy from the hosts.
Without the ball, Belgium compressed the central zones, preventing the USA from finding vertical runners between the lines. Whenever the Americans tried to press aggressively, Belgium simply played through the first wave and attacked the spaces behind.
Then came the substitutions. Introducing De Bruyne wasn't merely about creativity. It was about control. His positioning dictated the rhythm, his passing bypassed the American midfield and every touch forced the USA to defend facing their own goal.
Doku, meanwhile, stretched the pitch horizontally and vertically almost at the same time or sequence. Suddenly the American full-backs could no longer tuck inside. One-versus-one situations appeared repeatedly, creating gaps for Charles De Ketelaere, Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku to exploit.
The psychological element was equally impressive.
Many coaches would have panicked after substituting two superstars in the previous round. Garcia doubled down. He showed the squad that accountability applies to everyone, and then rewarded the players once they responded positively.
That is elite squad management.
The biggest lesson from Belgium isn't just tactical flexibility. It's courage.
Managers often say no player is bigger than the team.
Rudi Garcia actually coached like he believed it.

“Following comments by a South African minister to the effect that compensation will not be paid to Nigerians whose properties were looted, shops burnt, and even lives taken, that the government of Nigeria reciprocate by appropriating the profit accruing from South African shares in all South African companies in Nigeria, including their bank, IBTC... that the money be seized and use to pay Nigerians.” — Adams Oshiomhole

That's not an eagle. It's an owl - Eurasian eagle-owl, to be precise. The wings are large enough to go round the man as both wings can reach 6 feet. They're apex predators o. Once they reach adult stage, nothing hunts them but they hunt other hunters.
Remember fox 🦊 that hunts other animals, these birds hunt them.
Remember peregrine falcon, the fastest animal in the world? Eurasian eagle-owls hunt them.
Their talons can exert a grip strength strong enough to crush the skull of a small deer or fox.
Back to this one the man is holding. Her name is Sonia and she's surprisingly very snuggly with her human caregivers.

Imagine this bird flying right over your head. Is that an eagle? I don't think eagles can be tamed like this.
