@pmarca In first grade, our teacher handed out maps showing that our neighborhood outside of Chicago would be covered by a glacier due to a pollution-caused ice age. Mom said it was okay because we were moving to Phoenix that summer. (And they wonder why Gen X are skeptical.)

@klara_sjo BBC Pidgin is so weird because they feel they need to translate "with" as "wit" but apparently the phrase "traditional Buddhist robes" is no problem for viewers to understand.

The last few days I've noticed a massive uptick in the number of people wearing masks in the Bay Area and it's starting to feel like 2021 again for some reason.

@ClickingSeason If journalists like Yglesias are still in 2026 seeing things through the lens of "left" or "right" then they are hopelessly lost. Trump 2016 would not have been possible without how Romney was treated in 2012.

Trump was 100% a backlash to the Obama 2 turn in left-liberalism in which it became clear that they were committed to “identity” becoming the alpha and omega of meaning and we would never, ever be permitted to “get over it.” Trump was whites saying “ok, fine, if we must.”
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

I don’t think Trump was a backlash to Obama at all, Obama was very popular in 2016 as the labor market finally got good. Clinton ran to Obama’s left on several issues and was hobbled by saturation-level television news coverage of the fake email scandal.

I’ve done it. Basically they convert an A350 into a flying gas can. They built the plane just for this route. Since they need so much fuel, they can’t have as many passengers. So it’s all just business class and first class. For the first part of the flight, you’re at low cruise altitude because the plane is so darn heavy with all the fuel that they can’t reach its maximum altitude until several hours into the flight. You are heading north for the first half of the flight and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a great view of the northern lights in winter. The service is among the very best you’ll ever get on commercial travel and the menu is a constant delight of delicious meals and snacks for the entire flight
Mario Nawfal@MarioNawfal

🇺🇸🇸🇬 NYC to Singapore is the world’s longest regularly scheduled, non-stop flight. 9,500 miles. 19 hours in the air. In-flight movie? Try the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy… twice.

THIS, right here, is exactly why I no longer enjoy foreign travel. I loved the difficulties of learning phrases in another language and figuring out currency and reading up on another people's customs. Now, everything is "easy" - English-first, tourist-ready, familiar and FLAT.
Tom Goodwin@tomfgoodwin

@annbauerwriter "travel is getting harder"? Traveling 30 years ago was FAR harder. Even finding a place to stay was hard in much of the world without just turning up, having cash and speaking the language, today everything is absurdly easy, just more expensive.

Here’s how Jeff recently affected me: Watching a movie on Amazon prime and the commercials came on with a link that you can use your remote to put the item in your cart. Haha, thought I, I’m not going to start doing that now! Next spot was a new Mr. Clean Magic Eraser specifically for the bathtub. Click. Coming Monday. Eat it, AOC.

Here’s how Jeff Bezos affects me: He made it much easier to run a household with small children. I probably get 5-10 Amazon packages every week. That time saved means my wife and I can spend more time with the kids or go for a run in the park or do any number of things we’d rather to be doing than ‘shopping.’ The overvalued Amazon stock has also helped bloat my overvalued retirement funds. I’m supposed to cry because he jacked himself up on steroids, has a paper fortune of a few hundred $ billion, and is floating around on his mega yacht with his over surgeried 2nd wife? That’s crazy, I’m not going to do that, the last thing I’m going to cry about is ‘Jeff Bezos.’

@klara_sjo In my old neighborhood in Berlin there was this giant orange Brutalist thingy (a sign at street level said it was an Argentinian Steakhouse) that stood out amongst the greyness of the rest of the area. So I guess I lived in Eastern Europe then.

You're not gonna believe this, but Gavin Newsom's new "free diapers" program is yet another corrupt NGO money laundering operation. Kelly Sawyer runs Baby 2 Baby, an LA charity that provides baby gear to poor mothers. If you go to an LA private school, you get solicited to donate to it every year (and I have). Newsom announced he's giving $20 million to Baby 2 Baby to give new mothers free diapers. Only, he's not giving it directly to mothers in the form of supermarket vouchers or gift cards -- he can't do that, because then Kelly Sawyer's Hollywood producer husband Jamie Patricof wouldn't be able to funnel this money back into Newsom's presidential campaign. Jamie Patricof, you see, is one of the top donors and campaign bundlers for the democrats in California. He's the son of venture capitalist Alan Patricof, one of the biggest bundlers for the Clintons. Jamie took over for Alan, who's 94. Newsom is giving $20 million of our money to his close pals the Patricofs' pet "nonprofit." How much is going to get kicked back to Newsom's campaign? How much do the Patricof's get? This plan is more full of poop than a newborn's Huggies.

@klara_sjo The best part is that he's reading Lenin and yet look out the window and you see an auto shop or whatever in the middle of New Jersey and that's the real working class of the USA so instead of actually talking to the guys who tailgate Giants games he's reading fucking V.I. Lenin.
