There were no public trash cans at all in the early 70s, litter was utterly out of control, every roadside was a trash bin. Cars belched awful fumes at stop lights, smog was frankly terrible. There's a reason the environmental movement originated in the 70s.
And yes poor: we went out to eat on birthdays, went to a movie a few times a year. Everything was bland and products were cheap and shoddy. We all thought the world was falling apart, and to see Zoomers idealizing it like they do....
