@allyv28 @davidfrum Because it's not just about how much they import directly. If there's a shortage, Europe can't make up the shortfall on their own, they'll have to buy it. America has its own oil to pull from. Plus, things like fertilizers, petroleum products, etc go thru & all costs will rise.

@donniebenjamin @davidfrum Europe imports 3.8% of its oil through the Strait versus the US's 2.5%. The UK imports none that way. I've no idea why so many Americans think they're holding Europe/UK over a barrel here.

If you wonder why Europeans flinch from helping US in Gulf - in January, NATO allies were seriously preparing for a US sneak attack on Greenland, planning to blow up runways to prevent a Trump re-enactment of Putin's failed strike on Kyiv.
Orla Joelsen@OJoelsen

Denmark prepared for a possible U.S. attack: Flew blood supplies to Greenland and planned to blow up runways Key sources in Denmark and Europe are now revealing for the first time what happened during the most critical days, when Donald Trump threatened to take Greenland “the hard way.” When Danish soldiers were rapidly deployed to Greenland in January this year, they brought explosives with them. The plan was to destroy runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq to prevent American military aircraft from landing troops on the island, should the U.S. president ultimately decide to seize Greenland by force. They also transported blood supplies from Danish blood banks so wounded personnel could be treated in case of combat. This is reported by DR, which over the past year has spoken with central sources in the Danish government, top military officers, and high-ranking officials and intelligence sources in Denmark, France, and Germany. All sources have played—and continue to play—key roles in the international crisis triggered by the United States’ demand for control over Greenland. Together, the sources describe an unprecedented year marked by sleepless nights. None of them had concrete intelligence of specific American attack plans against Greenland. Still, many feared in January that the historically important ally, the United States, could attack at any moment. At the same time, Denmark reached out to its European allies, leading to closer cooperation. “With the Greenland crisis, Europe realized once and for all that we must be able to handle our own security,” said a French senior official involved in the intense period. A rapid-response force consisting of Danish, French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish soldiers was first deployed to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. Shortly after, a main force followed, including: -Soldiers from the Danish Dragoon Regiment in Holstebro -Elite troops from the Jaeger Corps -French alpine troops trained for cold and mountainous warfare At the same time, Danish fighter jets and a French naval vessel were sent to the North Atlantic. According to several sources, the goal of having multinational troops on the ground was to ensure that any U.S. attempt to take Greenland would require a large-scale hostile action—thereby deterring such an attempt. “We have not been in such a situation since April 1940,” said a Danish defense source, referring to the days before Denmark’s occupation during World War II. Unlike in 1940, when Denmark chose not to resist militarily, the government and defense leadership this time decided—after extensive confidential discussions—to take the opposite approach: If the U.S. attempted an attack, Danish forces would be armed and ready to fight. Danish F-35 fighter jets deployed north were also fully armed. All this despite the understanding that Denmark could not realistically withstand a U.S. military attack. “The cost for the U.S. had to be raised. The U.S. would have to carry out a hostile act to take Greenland,” said a senior Danish defense source. Source: DR

@donniebenjamin @davidfrum Sure, but nobody in Europe believes that a war is an effective way to do it. There is for a start a physical impossibility to control a 400 km Strait that is exposed 270°. Control requires a long term solution. This war is not bringing that despite the might of the US military.

@GregHadfield The high-end estimates for Palestinians directly killed by Israel since 1948 is 200,000. So it's taken78 years for Israel to kill a mere 1/10th of the entire population of Gaza. Iran killed over 30,000+ civilians in 1 week 300,000+ dead in Sudan since 2023 Just saying.

I’m not going to reference any single news article. There are so many! But in 70 years I can’t think of a state as evil, vicious, and immoral as Israel today. The world would obviously be better off if Israel was “eliminated”, “terminated”, or “obliterated”. Why do Israel and the United States use such euphemisms for murdered, killed, eviscerated?

@general_marcT @davidfrum I'm not even saying that Europe must help, or should, I'm just wondering how that calculus isn't factoring into their thinking. Regardless of how they feel, it's vital for Europe that the Strait is open. If helping is the only way to achieve that, then what other choice is there?

@donniebenjamin @davidfrum It does not work like that. There is a good reason why you have civilians running the military in a democracy. The military do not declare tariffs, piss off continuously decade long allies and start a war of choice.

@angela86186450 @davidfrum Understandable, but they still need the Strait to be open more than America does. Just because they don't trust American leadership doesn't mean that they don't share a specific objective.

@drbanten @general_marcT @davidfrum I think it may be possible to secure it to a point where at least some ships can be insured and the risk drops to a somewhat acceptable level, allowing oil to be shipped to the places that need it. Maybe not all of it, but enough to avert shortages.

@sottewillsoulsb @davidfrum But that's my point. I understand that Europe doesn't like the war, but they would be bailing themselves out, not trump. Regardless of why the war started, the fact that the Strait is closed hurts Europe more than America. They can help open it without supporting the war itself.

@donniebenjamin @davidfrum Because (1) war with Iran is incredibly unpopular in all European countries, (2) Trump is the reason the Strait is closed and is not famous for his good faith. Bailing him out will only encourage him to keep pulling these stunts with no guarantee that he’ll show any gratitude.

@general_marcT @davidfrum First of all, thank you for your service. I respect your view, and I can't blame you for thinking this way. Do European countries trust those in charge of the US military? If so, they may be able to coordinate militarily for their own aims without worrying about Trump.

I have 46 years in uniform, commanded the Belgian Army and ended my career as assistant Joint Chief of Belgian Defense. I have the deepest respect for the US military since the day I patrolled the iron curtain (1986) up to my last day in uniform in 2023. On this side of the Atlantic nobody trusts the US Commander-in-Chief anymore. This trust was already gone by the end of January 2025 when he stated that he does not need Allies. The rest of the year only made it worse! It makes me sad, but reality is what it is.

@MarioNawfal America IS fighting Israel's war... because it's the entire world's war. Iran threatens ALL democracies. America and Israel are on the front lines, but this war is everyone's war. If you value freedom and justice and security and peace, this is your war.

Just wanna say; thank God for @AIPAC this morning. America is not stronger with Jew-hating extremists in office. America is not stronger when people are elected who morally invert terrorist attacks. AIPAC benefits all Americans. Not just Jewish Americans who support Israel.

@Cappyarmy The Basij is a volunteer paramilitary militia. None of them HAVE to be there. If this were the Artesh, I would be more inclined to agree with you. The Basij militia don't get that leeway. They knew they would be told to kill their own people, and they signed up anyway.

Just thinking here out loud but , The problem with going down the chain from killing hardliner IRGC , to then killing Iran’s Basiji militia , ….to then killing Iranian police officers . You’re reaching a point where you’re no longer killing the leadership , you’re killing the Iranian people and the citizens families , many of whom are just trying to make a living and get by and manning a Basiji Militia checkpoint or police checkpoint doesn’t mean you want the Islamic republic in control. I dunno, what do you guys think ?

This sad, broken, stupid person was director of the national counterterrorism center? Really? His whole letter is just an argument that it's all one giant Israeli conspiracy. And it isn't even a good version of that argument. It's just a crazy reddit post on federal stationery. He got completely lost down that rabbit hole. Lost enough to taint his own wife's death with this garbage. No, Israeli officials didn't dupe Trump into an anti-Iran posture that Trump has championed consistently since long before ever running for office. And no, Israel didn't dupe America into the Iraq War in 2003. Israel actually told America in real time not to go to Iraq because it was taking its eye off the real threat in Iran. That was Prime Minister Sharon's argument. (Yes, Netanyahu once gave testimony in Congress in favor of the Iraq war. He was a private citizen at the time. If that was enough to drag America to war, you've got bigger problems than Israel.) But it gets so, so much worse. This poor sod literally claims he lost his wife to "a war manufactured by Israel." But he lost his wife in Syria fighting ISIS -- a fight he actually supports in this very letter. So which is it? It's tragic reading this kind of insane babble from a broken man. More to the point, this isn't a man capable of understanding or articulating policy. He certainly wasn't in the room when any of these decisions were made. If he was, he wouldn't be telling old lies about old wars. It's good that he's quitting. When all you can see is the demonic specter of the "Jew" blocking out everything else in sight, you no longer have much to offer your country. No, America isn't this stupid. No, Israel isn't this nefarious or powerful. And no, your wife didn't die for Israel, but for America. What a sad, broken, stupid, incompetent man you had running your counterterrorism, America. And what a sad, pathetic party the Republican Party will become if this is its future.
Joe Kent@joekent16jan19

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

MORE | US forces likely have at least local air dominance along certain segments of the coast of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has not attacked any vessels in the Strait since March 12. Anti-regime media also published footage on March 12 that shows a US Navy F/A-18 Hornet engaging targets with its auto cannon at extremely low altitude in Chabahar, Sistan, and Baluchistan Province, which is on the Iranian coast on the Gulf of Oman. US air dominance along segments of the coast would enable US aircraft to engage drones and anti-ship cruise missiles at low altitudes to protect shipping if ordered to do so.

NEW | Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s reported inner circle is dominated by long-standing hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders. Their influence will almost certainly drive Iran toward more hardline, anti-Western policies and deepen existing patterns of regime corruption and securitization. The Iranian regime has taken steps to further restrict the flow of information out of Iran, which will almost certainly limit CTP-ISW's ability to observe strikes in Iran. The combined force targeted a likely Iranian drone facility in South Khorasan Province in one of the combined force’s easternmost strikes since the war began. Iran has not attacked any vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since March 12.
