@FroemelAndy @MattWalshBlog But at the same time, it would be good for Matt to wait. If he doesn’t get fired, many people are wrong about Ben. If he does get fired, his value goes up further. Would be nice to know the truth.

Today Lindsey Graham, who for some reason has been the White House's top spokesman for this war, went on TV and invoked Iwo Jima while calling for more escalation in Iran. Iwo Jima of course involved 26 thousand US casualties. It's extremely troubling that Graham has so much influence with the administration and has been so empowered to speak on its behalf. He is not conservative, he is not America first, he has never done a single thing in his career to advance the interests of actual American citizens, and he clearly wants this war to continue indefinitely and doesn't care how many Americans die in the process. He should have no influence and no say over anything. He's one of the worst people in all of congress and that includes the Democrats.

@cyantist @pmarca 100%. Uncharacteristic lack of nuance from @pmarca on this one. Blatantly obvious is level 1, good introspection that produces positive results vs bad introspection, which happens to include lack of quality introspection, another obvious miss. Break down subsets from there…

@Alan_Couzens 2020s - trust those who have earned trust, live healthy, take medicine when necessary and research supports the effectiveness for what you’re trying to treat or prevent. 2030s - AI is more useful, research is better, and the liars on both sides are easier to detect and destroy.

1850's - Well shit, 50% of my family just died from infectious diseases 😢. One day, we'll have medicine to prevent that from happening. 1950's - Yay science! We have vaccines and antibiotics. Now my family won't die from infectious diseases. 🥳 2050's - I'm not taking your medicine, you big pharma shill! - RIP humanity. 🪦

@sysxplore What do we have to unplug to get you to develop a higher EQ? So many reasons this is not a good problem assessment or root cause solution (oops, my own low EQ is showing!) Good bait tho.

I watched a senior dev move his hand from the keyboard to the mouse. He clicked "File," then "Save." The entire motion took 1.4 seconds. I tapped on his shoulder. I asked if he was allergic to efficiency or just enjoyed the scenic route. He looked confused and said he was just saving his code. I told him that 'Ctrl+S' takes 0.2 seconds. Over a year, his mouse usage costs the company three days of development time. He said it was muscle memory. I told him his muscles were bad at math. I unplugged his mouse and forced him to use Vim.

@esaumccaulley Agreed. But there are also a lot of whiny babies. Thankfully both types been dropping from my feed, or at least being minimized. Unfortunately the theological content is being minimized, too. Need to make a proper list of follows.

I simply do not believe that some of y'all are this mad all the time about the stuff you are posting about. If so your whole day is spent in a rage and that's just not sustainable. It's giving performative. It's treating the faith like content.

Our agency had the second and third-place finishers at the USATF Half Marathon Championships yesterday, Carrie Ellwood and Annie Rodenfels, respectively. I am gutted for the athletes impacted by the on-course mishap and for the Atlanta Track Club team. I also understand the precarious position this places USATF, given their published selection criteria for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen this September. The USATF selection procedures state that the top three finishers at the National Championships will earn automatic selection to the World Championships, with one additional at-large spot going to the top-ranked athlete in the World Athletics global rankings (full criteria below). Should any athlete on the podium decline, USATF will then fill those spots by order of finish, up to the fifth position. Earlier today, I had conversations with both Carrie and Annie. Both athletes prefer that the rightful team of Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat be named to the team representing the Stars & Stripes, as it was a foregone conclusion that they had the team spots locked up, given their lead and proximity to the finish. I’ve had conversations with USATF today as well and understand by selecting those three they would be going against their selection criteria, as Jess (ninth), Emma (twelfth), and Ednah (thirteenth) finished outside the top-five designation. There is the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. The spirit of the selection criteria is to send the strongest possible team to the global championships, that spirit should win out here. Doing the right thing matters, and as a former athlete who has been on both sides of lead vehicle snafus—as the beneficiary (New Haven, 2000), and as the punished (Air Force Marathon 13.1, 2011)—I understand what the athletes are going through now. This is an opportunity for USATF to name Jess, Emma, and Ednah to Team USA. Should any of them decline, Carrie and Annie would happily step in, be ready roll, and do our country proud. 🇺🇸 I want to thank USATF for making this such a priority at this time. They're working hard on a solution, and I'm sure we’ll have one in short order. (Photo: Annie and Carrie in a gratuitous post-race doping control shot #CleanSport)

@justinskycak This hasn’t stopped corporate slop! They’re more than willing to rack up technical debt and charge you more for worse products and less testing. There is no longer any enterprise software I consider on par with the enterprise quality of 20 years ago.

Finished the Bible this morning. Total reading time: 80 hours 54 minutes. Started on January first with Genesis 1 and finished this morning at the end of Revelation. My goal each year is to read the entire Bible start to finish in 2 months. Barely made it again. It’s a practice that gets exponentially better each year and I plan to continue this until I croak. I had hoped to include the Apocrypha this year, but got a little behind and will try to include it next year.

We need to help the younger generation(s). It’s everyone’s responsibility. (No, that does not mean everyone else!)

Major new report on global trends in mental health, out today from Sapien Labs. Data from 2.5 million people across 85 countries. Some of the most important findings: 1) Young adults used to generally have good mental health, compared to older generations. But now, in ALL countries examined, they are doing badly compared to older generations in that country. 2) "Four key factors have emerged that together predict three quarters of this effect. These are diminished family bonds, diminished spirituality, smartphones at increasingly young age, and increasing consumption of ultra-processed food." 3) The decline of young people's mental health is "most pronounced in the wealthier and more developed countries." They note that it is in such countries that smartphones are given earliest, junk food is most heavily consumed, spirituality is most diminished, and family ties are looser and often weaker. 4) "A younger age of first smartphone ownership is associated with increased suicidal thoughts, aggression, and other problems in adulthood." 5) Here is their summary of findings on early smartphone ownership: "GenZ is the first generation to grow up with a smartphone. Among this group, the younger they acquired their first smartphone in childhood, the more likely they are to have struggles as adults. These struggles extend beyond sadness and anxiety to less discussed symptoms, such as a sense of being detached from reality, suicidal thoughts, and aggression towards others. The effects arise through disruption of sleep, increased risk of exposure to harmful online content, predators, and explicit material as well as increased probabilities of cyberbullying during crucial developmental years. Excessive time spent on smartphones also diminishes the development of social cognition that requires learned interpretation of facial expressions, body language, and group dynamics. The negative impacts are particularly sharp below age 13." The report is short, accessible, and important. Read it here: sapienlabs.org/global-mind-he…

My kid just asked why we don't have a pool. I said because we don't need a pool. He said "Tommy's house has a pool." Tommy's house has a lot of things. Tommy's dad is a surgeon. I'm not getting into a "my dad versus Tommy's dad" economic comparison with a 10-year-old. I said pools are expensive to maintain and we wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost. He said "but we could use it every day in summer." We wouldn't. We'd use it for two weeks, get bored, and then it would sit there costing money. I've seen this play out with our neighbors. They put in a $60K pool. Used it constantly for one summer. Now it just exists. But I can't explain this to a kid who just wants to swim. So I said "maybe someday" which is parent code for "no but I don't want to argue about it." He seemed satisfied with that answer. I'm not getting a pool.

@Brady_H Why does everyone assume working out means going to the gym? Clueless comments. Low intensity is low risk but use caution. If your symptoms stay the same or get better, probably fine. Avoid nasal drainage into the chest and/or drying out throat- breathe carefully. Vit C/D/zinc

Working out when sick. What do we think? Unless I’m really debilitated, I’m working out if I’m sick. In general it makes me feel slightly better (acutely). And I convince myself I’m just sweating out whatever virus I’ve got.
