PS5; selling you a console at a loss for the express purpose of trapping you in their ecosystem with a subscription service for online use GabeCube; sold near cost, no ecosystem lock in, no subscription fees, ENTRY level plug and play pc with a custom gaming focused Linux OS
Pirat_Nation 🔴@Pirat_Nation

Linus Tech Tips believes the PS5 offers better value than the new Steam Machine at current prices. According to Linus, a $600 PS5 or $900 PS5 Pro is a better buy than a $1,049 Steam Machine, especially since both PlayStation consoles include a controller. “You can still buy a PS5 for $600 or a PS5 Pro for $900… and both include a controller.” — Linus Tech Tips

@TechGeekAnthony No because then people would buy it for Windows and their stock wouldn't go to their target audience. It's not a console so you can't subsidize it by controlling people's purchases on it.

Valve makes BILLIONS via game sales and live services and DLC. It's more profitable than Apple, Google, Microsoft and/or Netflix. And they couldn't Subsidize this even a little...? Also if they did they would STILL BE PROFITABLE!

I'm trying to understand why (and if I'm wrong, please correct me) Valve isn't offering a barebones version of the Steam Machine: Bring Your Own: RAM SSD Steam OS is free to download anyway, so it's not like there would be a compatibility problem. That'd cut the price hard.

@tax_xempt @Dontcarezh @RyozuK Its not a console 100% so its the other one. You'd never want to think of it that way cause consoles are designed to control how people use them. Performance wise it isn't a bad price for the components in today's too-high prices.

@RyozuK @tax_xempt Paying 1k for a console with a CPU that only has 2 big cores and 4 zen 4c cores is a fucking insult btw. Then adding on top that the GPU is a cut down version of the 7600M card is another insult. Congrats you’re spending 1k on hardware that was build for a laptop 3 years ago 😂

@RealJohnRose Did they ever show the result side-by-side? In this video they only showed a game and not the PC itself next to the Machine for a full comparison.

It is insane for the head of a media company (that sells ridiculously priced merch) to have a champagne socialist attitude to one of the most benevolent game companies in the industry. Linus knows he can’t replicate the form factor and plug-and-play experience of the Steam Machine. He’s just desperate for clickbait. I wish the cuck fairy would just shut up forever sometimes
AlphaFox@alphafox

Linus Tech Tips builds a computer for the same price as the Steam Machine, with almost double the performance. What is the point of this thing again?

A fully playable browser version of Half-Life 2 has just been released to the public. You don't need to download anything, just open the site and play! The webport was created by Slqnt and 98006 in just three months!

He's not going to be pushing it into that territory 24/7... That's what he was implying. He's configured the GPU so that it draws significantly less power (and heat) which are obviously two big factors he had to solve when putting something like this together. Undervolting can do wonders sometimes offering more performance at lower power usage.

Here she is, Terk Box v1. 1 I'm working with the designer about future improvements, but for a first major revision and she's now "complete" We added more ventilation in the back so the RTX 5060 is no longer choked. HMU if you want me to build you one.

@Niflheimm155983 All PC's I've made are sff. I have even used the same case in your photo but in silver. Doesn't change the fact that the Steam machine is terrible value. $1049+ for 1080p in 2026. It's hard to argue around the facts.

As one of probably very few people who have actually built a Steam Machine sized PC before, I can confirm this is true and also that it’s really hard You need to find a single fan GPU, which severely limits your choices and is usually expensive and hard to find, and then it’s nerve wracking to have to cram all your expensive components inside such a small case. I spent around the same as a 2tb steam machine + controller bundle when I was a college student for my Velka 3 build, which was also kind of loud btw Pic isn’t mine, just so you can see how small that case is

I don't agree with the 'office stockpile' reasoning behind not subsidizing the Steam Machine (especially considering Valve's anti-scalper strategy), but assuming it's the main reason. Then Valve has NO EXCUSE not subsidizing the Steam Frame.

@Perrincapybara That anti scalper strategy is just for the launch because they don't have enough stock for their target Steam customers as it is.

@Techjunkie_Aman You can't build a tiny PC as good as it for the same price though. It is totally valid as a good option depending on what people want. People building PCs is a good thing too.

I wanted the Steam Machine to succeed. The moment Valve announced it, I thought: "This could finally be the PC that replaces a console in the living room." Then the price dropped. $1,049. And suddenly, all that excitement turned into one question... "Why would I buy this instead of building a better gaming PC?" That's the problem. Not because the Steam Machine is bad. Far from it. It's beautifully engineered, incredibly compact, whisper quiet, runs SteamOS, gives you access to your entire Steam library, supports mods, emulation, desktop mode, free online multiplayer, and doesn't lock you into a closed ecosystem. Valve deserves credit for that. While everyone else is trying to lock players into subscriptions and exclusives, Valve is betting on openness. I respect that. But respecting the philosophy doesn't make the price easier to justify. At over $1,000, you're no longer competing with consoles. You're competing with custom-built PCs. And that's a fight the Steam Machine struggles to win. For the same money, you can build something faster. More powerful. More upgradeable. That's the uncomfortable truth. I honestly believe if Valve had launched this at around $699, the conversation today would be completely different. People would be calling it revolutionary. Instead, most people are calling it overpriced. The saddest part? The Steam Machine isn't failing because it's a bad product. It's failing because Valve priced a niche dream like a mainstream device. And that's a mistake even great hardware can't overcome. Do you think Valve got the pricing wrong, or is the premium justified?
