A sizeable part of the UK economy is kept afloat by a policy of Keynesian Incompetence. The government cannot actually build anything - the cost estimate for this project (a tunnel and a couple of junctions) ballooned to over £1bn - but it can keep consultants, lawyers, advisors, lobbyists and archeologists in gainful employment by starting projects anyway. It is more politically palatable to pay people to talk about digging holes for a few years than it is to put middle class professionals on the dole, even though it amounts to much the same thing in the end. (Apropos of nothing, this £179,000,000 could have funded the NHS for about 8 hours.)

@JamesKelly Simple 1) it will be a reform led gov at Westminster from 2029 at the latest 2) if they did win power at Holyrood (obvs unlikely) they can choose not to use whatever powers they like until they also control Westminster

I'm not pretending to have read the Reform manifesto for Holyrood, but I'd be interested to know how they think they can promise to regularly review the devolved powers of the parliament, given that the constitution is fully reserved to Westminster.

@TheMindScourge Think this is what’s known as ‘cope’ When the alternative is death you use your maximum deterrent It will take 3-5 years to build pipelines so you can load tankers away from Hormuz And rebuild refiniries This is just if we are going down you’re coming with us from Iran

Hormuz is a weapon that can only be fired once No one should expect a quick resolution to the current crisis, but across the next decade, even the next 3-5 years, the choke point of Hormuz will be massively substituted for The Gulf Arab states are all very rich, with high per capita GDP - the best single measure of relative state capacity - easy access to global markets, especially financial, and have the favorable backing of the US Everyone has known about the Hormuz vulnerability for decades. The Iranians have continually hinted around closing it, but never did. Now they have, but Hormuz is a gun that cannot be reloaded. Deterrents work only up to the point of use. Once used, they have failed. The purpose of a deterrent is to *not* be used Many analysts have made this basic mistake. They think that Iran is now in a position of strength, having exercised its Hormuz option. But the opposite is true. A state is weakest after it has used its deterrent. The cost of that deterrence is now priced in. The worst having been done, the targets of the deterrent are now free to make other arrangements. Before, they were reluctant to do so because of the switching costs. Now, they have no choice; they will not allow themselves to be controlled in this way again Hormuz may never reopen. But the importance of this is a depreciating asset.

Imagine if you had told the people who supported this stupidity 3 weeks ago that by now the Trump administration would ask Congress for a $200 billion supplemental, that it would be seriously considering using ground troops to hold Iranian territory and preparing for a weeks-long campaign, not to mention the fact that we're in for a large energy shock persisting for months even in the best case scenario. Anyone who is intellectually honest and not disconnected from reality knows they would have replied that it was complete nonsense, that you were just a panican, etc. But that's where we are and they're still pretending, not just that everything is going according to plan (as if there was a plan in the first place), but that it's actually going even better than they thought it would. It's just pure cult-like behavior at this point.

Wait a moment! The U.K. political parties said oil was running out back in 2014. 👀 Could they have been lying ? 😮 Gosh. What a shocker. 😮 12 years later it still being squandered by incompetent U.K. governments. We can change this. #bothvotesSNP

WSJ: Arab governments were furious about Israel’s attack and the U.S. failure to head it off, officials said. They had aggressively lobbied the Trump administration to stop U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and now feel a target has been put on their backs, they said… America’s Arab allies are now fuming that they don’t seem to have any influence with the Trump administration despite heavy investments of time and money.

Anas Sarwar's tenure as Scottish Labour leader is surely nearing an end. His performance at FMQ's was further proof that he isn't fit to lead any group at Holyrood far less lead the nation as First Minister. A thoroughly unpleasant individual. Graceless and lacking any dignity.

Anas Sarwar in recent weeks ... Rebuked by Lord Advocate for making misleading comments relating to a live case. Condemned by Fire Fighters for making misleading comments anout the Glasgow fire. Condemned by a stroke charity for a disgusting joke. If this was John Swinney it would be all over BBC Scotland and STV News. He'd be the subject of discussions with media commentators with his suitability as FM called into question. But it isn't Swinney. It's Sarwar.

“A wake up call” the CEO of Britain’s biggest domestic energy firm told me last night about the possibility of long term impact to global gas and oil infrastructure… but he pointed to electrification as the main lesson, while domestic gas would be preferable to shipped gas:

“wake-up call that gets us to electrify more of our economy and get more of our energy from homegrown sources.”

"The irony is, right now, we're emailing millions of customers saying their energy prices are going to fall..."
"You can't protect yourself against these global markets forever."
"Traders are really worried about how long it's going to take these facilities to get back online."
"Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources."
“my own view is that shipping gas around the world is more inefficient and has more leaks of methane than if you use local gas. But we shouldn't kid ourselves. North Sea gas wouldn't meaningfully bring the price down because we're paying the global price. If we got more out of the North Sea, it would simply be sold to other countries at these very high prices or here at these high prices. And we can't kid ourselves we're going to be self-sufficient in gas again. What we can do is have a much cheaper approach to electricity than we have today. Our electricity system's too inefficient. We need to reform that markets so that people get the benefits of our homegrown resources.

"The irony is, right now, we're emailing millions of customers saying their energy prices are going to fall..." Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, says energy prices could be impacted if disruption in the Strait of Hormuz "is not over quite quickly". #Newsnight
