How valuable is an MLB hitter who only bunts (never fully swings) but consistently hits .350 doing it? Assume he has the elite speed necessary to pull this off (so he can steal bases) but that all hits are singles. Is he a good offensive player or an offensive liability?

@CodifyBaseball Simple Grok query suggests that an offense would be considered GREAT if all 9 batters had that profile.

@CodifyBaseball Depends on the roster construction perhaps but probably a liability most of the time. GOAT bench player though, especially for the postseason.

@CodifyBaseball Are we assuming 0% BB rate? Also errors forced is probably higher than randomness, extra on bases that don’t count in OBP and BA Min OPS of 700 feels valuable either steals and likely a plus glove

@CodifyBaseball You're never a liability if you're consistently getting on base. This idea that you need home runs is the true liability

@CodifyBaseball I'm going to take issue with your hypothetical example. If he only bunted, every defense would bring in all three outfielders to play 45 feet from home plate, and that .350 would quickly turn into .000.

@CodifyBaseball What’s his walk rate? A .350 OBP with no power isn’t the same as a .400+ with no power. What sort of SB% is he putting up? Defense is also a question here. Is he doing this while being a liability or is he an elite defender at a premium position?

@CodifyBaseball This is like Luis Arraez but better because you almost never hit into a double play and always move runners with your outs. If there's a runner on base you basically always make a productive out, unless you strike out bunting.

It’s really amazing how much more valuable a player is when their BA increases .050 (either from .200-to-.250 or .250-to-.300 or .300-to-.350. A .050 BA is hitting 1-for-20. If a player can get one additional hit for every 20 AB his value to the team is increases quite dramatically.

@CodifyBaseball There is a point where your batting avg alone makes you valuable enough to play and be better than avg. If you can consistently hit over .333 with singles speed, stolen bases and be a good fielder with NOTHING else you can be a 5 win player and HOFer

@CodifyBaseball There are some cases where (1 out in the 9th, game tied, your catcher on third) bunting is sub-optimal to a swing, since even a fly ball out gets the win and a suicide squeeze too risky. But those stats are otherwise Tony Gwynn like. Even assuming no walks, few RBIs and some Ks!

@CodifyBaseball If you add in his likely SB number of 60 that moves his OPS to .800. Is a .350/.350/.800 slash line good? I would say so.

@CodifyBaseball League average OPS this year is .705. If this guy doesn’t take a single walk he has a .350/.350/.350 line, a .700 OPS. Mathematically he would be above average with literally any plate discipline. Plus elite speed, I want that dude on my team!

@CodifyBaseball If his bunts are hits 35% of the time then not only is he getting on base, but he’s also advancing base runners on a consistent basis. He is incredibly valuable.

@CodifyBaseball He would be great offensively if you somehow assume he can consistently hit .350 doing that without the defense being able to stop it, and being able to steal lots of bases. That basically turns most of those singles into doubles(as long as another runner isnt on 2nd)

@CodifyBaseball What's his OBP, OPS? You can't determine his value based only on batting average. If every at bat is ending one way or another by bunting, he would be about an average player. His OBS and slug would be basically .350 as well and OPS would be an average .700

@CodifyBaseball Depends on the lineup he’s in. Does he have a judge or really good hitters behind him? Bc if you constantly get on base and can steal a lot for elite hitters behind you, then you’re insanely valuable. People fail to realize baseball isn’t a one stat or one person sport
