@JonathanCohn No, the real reason is because Georgia is controlled by a republican Secretary of State and they pick the primary date. The Republican and Democratic primary are held on the same day in GA and a republican SOS isn’t gonna move up the date for Democrats.

There was no feasible way for North Carolina or Georgia to hold their contests in the early window based on their current state laws/political realities in their states – without either cooperation from Republican state officials or a change in control of relevant chambers and offices. In Georgia, the primary date is set by the secretary of state, who is a Republican, Brad Raffensberger, and previously refused to move the primary date to the 2024 early window, despite Georgia receiving a waiver from the RBC. The RBC attempted to give Georgia a waiver in 2024, but the state was unable to move their contest and the waiver was wasted, and the entire balance/intentions of the early window selection undermined.

@JonathanCohn I am a tier one Clyburn hater (happy to point to some recent receipts), but this isn't it. SC dem voters are blacker than GA & it's a way cheaper media market when we don't want the Early states to be a coronation for who has the biggest warchest to spend on adds.
