#PressRelease 18 Feb 2020 Aadhaar is not a citizenship document 1/n

There are news items in certain section of media regarding UIDAI issuing notices of inquiry to some residents for obtaining Aadhaar on false pretence on the complaints from the State Police which suspect them of being illegal immigrants. 2/n

UIDAI clarifies that these reports are not presented in correct perspective and Aadhaar has got nothing to do with the citizenship issue as such. 3/n

Aadhaar is not a document of citizenship and UIDAI has been mandated under the Aadhaar Act to ascertain residency of a person in India for 182 days prior to applying for Aadhaar. 4/n

Also, the Supreme Court of India in its landmark decision has directed UIDAI not to issue Aadhaar to illegal immigrants. 5/n

@UIDAI If Aadhaar is NOT a document of citizenship, then why is it used for voting? Can non-citizens vote in this country? How is it acceptable for voting, when voting can be done ONLY by citizens of this country?

@UIDAI Aadhar is not a document of anything but still a document of everything.

@UIDAI You said a person has to prove a residency of 182 days prior to apply, did you check when you issued Aadhar to them? If it is beyond 182 days, then they automatically become eligible for getting Aadhar.
