@stacycay If you're talking about people like Caster Semenya, you guys gaslit people for years that Semenya was merely a "female with high T". Turns out the high T was coming all along from his balls. We're done with the non-sense.

@wil_da_beast630 @GiffLasta @Muricaenjoyer In kink communities, "breath play" was considered serious business. And for good reason. If you don't know what you're doing, there are actual risks. Those untrained in martial arts, police training, actual pro-domme apprenticeship/training, etc., can do real damage.

@GiffLasta @Muricaenjoyer You don't do a goddamn blood or air choke during sex, guys. It's a hand. You put a light hand on someone's neck during intense sex, so they feel "dirty/kinky" and "dommed." This is another moral panic. There is almost literally no risk to this.

"An entire generation of women" is not going to be "paralyzed" by light choking that they ask for and anal sex on Valentine's Day. Is there a rule that twitter poasters have to sound like the most extreme hysterics possible? Are we breaking it?

@glitchdig0 There wasn’t a vote today- but the questioning from the democrats was really sad. It’s like they are all stuck in like 2015 on this…

Today the LGB Courage Coalition testified in Ohio in support of HB 693. Afterward we wrote to the Democratic members who questioned us — as gays and lesbians — to say: you cannot pivot to bread and butter issues until the party reckons with this one. We supported the idea of the transgender child without the medical evidence to back it. Country after country in Europe has now restricted these practices after systematic review. The evidence was never what we were told it was. The path back to disaffected liberals runs directly through this issue. They are not going to set it aside. The party needs to be able to say: we got this wrong. Until it can, many of us cannot come home.

This is one of my most galactically stupid takes in a long time; I’m going to chalk it up to “neoliberalism” being so categorically/broadly applied that I forgot it originally denoted the Carter-Reagan ‘new-classical-liberalism’ applied in response to a Keynesian normative mode.

"Trans woman" is a compound noun, not an adjective+noun sequence. Some constituency tests: INSERTION ✔️a slim, tall woman ❌️a trans, tall woman CONJUNCTION ✔️a tall and slim woman ❌️a tall and trans woman EMPHATIC DOUBLING ✔️a slim, slim woman ❌️a trans, trans woman

@Glinner Exactly this. And it is amazing that when you put it simply like this, without being specific, even the people who disagree with us agree on that point. Around 2020, I wrote something like that, and I was slightly amused how many True Believers thought it was a "good point!"

I hate feeling self-conscious about my heavy use of em dashes but, if it's ever necessary, I can produce some essays from high school where I wildly, wildly overuse them.

@SandyofCthulhu My position exactly. A cosmopolitan fantasy city could be wildly diverse. But what we see in some of the random rural fantasy scenes in television feels frankly absurd.

I’m sorry but how can gay men be mad at bi men “using them for sex” when they’re already using each other for sex. Gay men are the least likely to get married and half of male-male couples are in open relationships. What difference does it make to yall if the guy wants to settle down with a wife lol
Effervescent Enby@EffervescentNB

@katysattorney @izztastic I don’t think you’ve really encountered the men he’s speaking of. Those men will blatantly say and make it obvious that they ultimately want to commit to women and only interact with men for sex

@thatazuresea Fantastic piece. Bluebeard's Egg is my favorite fairy tale, and I think about it all the time. Leigh's insights feel like they simultaneously cut to the bone and are incredibly generous to West. Thanks for this link!

@SandyofCthulhu I believe what Kenneth Burke wrote in 1939 about Mein Kampf was quite spot on - we need to know what poison is being sold to the people and try to understand why it works to the extent it does.

@HormoneHangover @buddyhollyriff I'm not from Indiana, but Wisconsin, and I've lived in NYC. In both Indiana and Wisconsin, most places, the doors like this both open. But I can absolutely think of places where they don't. This is the exception, though.

@buddyhollyriff Maybe I’m misremembering through the rosy glow of nostalgia and they actually do it in Indiana too. I’m just thinking about it because I got ragebaited by a couple prank doors this morning. Why do stores do that

@HistoryBoomer I think TERF was coined in the 90s. I'm finishing up my manuscript, which is about how liberals traded belief in gender identity over science. it includes some of this. But the objections started in the 1970s with second-wave feminists.

Someone should write a history of trans activism and the gender-critical reaction. From all I've read, almost all the early fighting happened in feminist spaces. Think Michigan Womyn's Festival's "womyn-born womyn" policy or Julie Bindel's columns going back to the early 2000s. Conservatives didn't care about inside-feminism wars. C'mon, it's right in the name! "TERF" (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist) was coined back in 2008, but by the early 2010s, it was being used as a pejorative (I heard it from trans students around then). It's only around 2014 that conservatives started paying a lot of attention, realizing they had a hot issue. Their early efforts floundered (bathroom bills). It's ramped up since then, but so have feminists (hello JK Rowling entering the arena in 2019). So it's more complicated than Chris Rufo doing stuff (although he did do stuff!).
Sami Gold@souljagoyteller

People like Chris Rufo smartly chose wedge issues like trans athletes competing in women’s sports bc it forced liberals to choose between feminism and “the trans”. Since Democrats don’t know and don’t care about how things like HRT work, they didn’t know how to argue back

Hard Agree. Giger’s extraordinary set design, as well as Bolaji Bodego’s unheralded performance as the Xenomorph made the original Alien, imo, the most seamlessly Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror film.
m3d@YoneyMike

@vurnt22 For what is worth the original Alien fits into my Lovecraft head canon. Giger was definitely channeling the great old ones.

It’s another in the Failed Lovecraftian oeuvre. Reanimator,(1985) , is a superior film to Beyond, mainly because of Jeffrey Combs’ inspiredly loony Herbert West. As fun as that film is, it’s not Mythos. It’s incredibly frustrating that Cthulhu his not yet been realized on screen.
Jeff Blehar is *BOX OFFICE POISON*@EsotericCD

@vurnt22 FROM BEYOND isn't what I'd call a *good* movie but it's really compelling. Always think of that one as a pairing with Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS.
