@lurkingnobody @db_econ The small urban area might only be 150k ppl but it takes less than an hour to get into the centre of London on the train. If England were built like Australia there would be suburban sprawl and not a patch of farmland in that 50km distance between the two urban areas.

@thamoonman_ If you were utilitarian you would need to consider how likely it is a kid is even going to bother and have capacity to learn, and also how it might impact their ability to learn more about English as well. In this respect Western European languages are x10 more useful to teach.

In an ideal world corp tax would be lower and resource companies should still pay quite a bit more. That the corporate tax gets some economic rent isn’t an argue not to optimise.

Venice obviously very rich too with a trade focused port economy. I said Latin to exclude Eastern Rome.

It's an interesting fact of human history that we have these two similar sized islands, Japan and the UK that are close to a mainland, and have had outsized influence and power throughout history compared to their size.
Having an island of a certain size or above separated from the mainland really seems like a powerful starting position.
Both held their own historically against the significantly larger continental rival (France, China).
Madagascar and the southern African mainland present a similar geographical arrangement, but it hasn't had the same historical importance.

Quantum physics for eg breaks traditional physics but we'll figure it out eventually & once we do, we'll have a new baseline of the right answer. It's iterative in one direction. Humanities, not so.

There is a fundamental disconnect between STEM and humanities/philosophy in that STEM by its nature does not value the wisdom of the ancients in any special way. We understand a lot more about Einstein's theories than Einstein did, because we have had a century to find deeper, simpler, and clearer ways to think about the physics. Contemporary scientists by and large are not confused about the things that Einstein was confused about, we are confused about new things, that Einstein barely imagined.

@WKCosmo A better way to think of humanities is an eternal struggle to quibble over what are even the right questions to ask and what are the right assumptions of what humans value are at any point in time. It's why what someone wrote 500 or 1000 years ago is still relevant.

@WKCosmo It doesn't need to value ancients as the universe doesn't change over time. You can always just build onto the answers of what came before. Humanities ask 'how and why do HUMANS do things'. Problem is humans change across time & place and are never predictable.
