I'm fascinated by the emerging consensus that having your navy and air force destroyed, your leadership killed off, and having lost complete control of your air space is actually evidence that one is winning. Crazy that we are only now discovering this new military strategy.

@The_Suburbanist It's just a coincidence that even in urban areas, the first thing people buy as soon as they can afford it is space.

@paddypower Chelsea 6th, Newcastle 9th, Spurs 16th... They're bums in the league too. Man City losing so badly to Madrid is the only surprise here. Liverpool still probably qualifies.

@CFCMods Man City aside (who are in a slump still), the other clubs are bums. Chelsea are 6th, Newcastle 9th, Spurs 16th. The dregs of the league, basically, lol.

@DoubleEph 'A complete lack of technological learning, upgrading or mastery after 20yrs of govt protection.' This is exactly what one would expect to happen without real competition. It would be odd if it *weren't* the case. It's cheaper to spend money lobbying than doing r&d...

This - from The Economist - is the first time this specific topic has been brought up in any major media in relation to Dangote. A complete lack of technological learning, upgrading or mastery after 20yrs of govt protection. Every other criticism I make of Dangote you can hang it on this one. It is utterly utterly shameful.

@TheMindScourge Yeah ppl in the developed world have an outdated view of the third world. It's been steadily (haltingly, unevenly) growing since like the mid nineties. There are pretty nice parts!

A lot of comments on this account saying (the equivalent of) “this is Baghdad?” It’s like that video of Addis Ababa that circulated a month or two ago. Everyone’s surprised cities in the developing world aren’t all grass huts and tumble weeds Infrastructure is (mostly) a solved problem. Baghdad builds in a modem architectural style like anyone else. They either import the products through global supply chains, or they important the machine tools and knowhow that enables building this way The people who live there are all on TikTok and see how people live in Melbourne or Orange County. They want that locally, too

@aGuyOnMyPhone @AndyMasley This doesn't resolve anything though. Herbert says it is a cautionary tale about messianic leaders and then writes a messianic leader who's actually right and does save humanity.

@AndyMasley The Lisan al Gaib is a false messiah figure that Paul steps into only after long propaganda campaigns create the role for him. The Quisach Haderach is a real messiah figure and Paul is that

Yeah this point does confuse me a lot. Dune is "a cautionary tale about messianic leaders" and yet in later books it's revealed that Paul's actions were the only way to keep humanity free. The messianic leader was in fact smarter than everyone else and had to use cold utilitarian logic to do what was best. He literally is a messianic leader saving everyone. That doesn't seem like the message people often scold you into taking away!
itamar@ItamarLevyOr

@AndyMasley You need to understand that even though paul atreides can canonically see the future, and is following the only course of action that persists humanity, he is actually a bad man.

@TimesLIVE The is no such a thing as “city’s R777m emergency water supply” the bulk of that amount is made out of historical invoices not paid and settled by @CilliersB when he was mayor of Tshwane. If you want to campaign for DA do so openly not through lies
