Some of you may not know this, but my wife passed away late last year from cancer. Stage IV, aggressive, and it was everywhere, including her brain. After months of doctors telling us it was “just bronchitis,” we finally went to the ER. She was diagnosed in April and gone by August. I miss her deeply. I’m only a man, and the grief hit me hard. I started drinking, heavily. Too much. And I know I need to stop, permanently. I’m not a religious man, but I am spiritual. I believe in a higher power, even if I don’t follow a specific doctrine. Yesterday, while walking to clear my head, I decided to pray. At one point I said out loud, “I love drinking, but I’d like to quit.” Then a voice in my head said: “My son, you need to like drinking, but love quitting.” It gave me chills. I asked for help, and I was given an answer. Now comes the hard part. I’m on a journey, taking it one day at a time. I have the answer, now I need the discipline. I’m sharing this in case it helps someone else who’s grieving or struggling emotionally in the same manner. You are not alone.
