@MarketPalmer_ @SparkingFIRENC It is not an option unless you mean read stuff on your own. Money and the discussion thereof has been anathema to medical curriculum forever. In order to get into medical school in the first place you have to pretend you don't care about it.

@SparkingFIRENC I'm sure it was an option at some point (for most). But unsure if it's a requirement.

Recently learned that 25% of 60-year old doctors have a net worth below $1 million. How…?

@karol @KathyHochul @mkhammer I would love to move to my family home in the Adirondack Mountains but absolutely can and will not pay the $60-80K/yr more in taxes this move would cost. These people are insane

This only applies to specialities where you have no skills other than diagnostics. In my world, I have to be able to manipulate 2D images and reconstruct them in my mind and navigate needles and trochars into bone tendons and muscles under fluoroscopy and ultrasound. We are so far away from any robot being able to handle the anatomical variability or translatable skill sets that this whole argument about AI replacing doctors is nonsense. It will replace diagnosis but medicine happens to people and doesn’t involve just prescribing a pill. The more procedural you are in the medicine the more protected you are. Not to mention treatments like PRP and stem cell which are highly personalized cannot be done with some algorithm and the procedures are highly variable in terms of targets pathology and treatment planning. Long story short don’t go into primary care. Go into procedural areas of medicine if you want to be relevant.

med school is trade school for physicians its extremely hard work but not very intellectually challenging (mostly college-level work) so going to med school and not doing clinical medicine makes little sense a thought experiment may help illustrate this… #1/2
Isaac Kohane@zakkohane

I have a lot of discussions with medical students @harvardmed and elsewhere about residency and the paths to take to change medicine for the better. Here is an interesting take from one of those students opmed.doximity.com/articles/why-i…

@monsterhunter45 Unfortunately it's because when people see a new book release they go "that's great" and move on whether or not they want the book but when they see something like the Chavez issue they like and retweet

"If she didn’t want to be a mom, she shouldn’t have had s*x." Cool. Then by that logic, if he didn’t want to be a dad, he should’ve kept it in his pants too. Equality hurts, huh?

Idk why gas prices are so culturally salient in america. You could drive an hour a day and it probably comes to less than $3k/year. Is it because they put the price on billboards along the road?

@bryan_caplan Is there anyone who disagrees? I think the set of people who even think about it fall into 2 groups: those that think it will stay leftist and think it's a good thing and those that think it will stay left and that it's a bad thing. I think the rest of the Punnet square is empty.

@bryan_caplan Ok - I will take this bet that humanity/social science dept will be majority left/socialist in Canada for 1k, and 500 for US. “Extremely” is 70% or more on aggregate

@sgodofsk Styrofoam was exceedingly uncommon in consumer use in 1969. It was only about 20 years old at that point and was not a common packing material.

The least stressed landlords were the ones who kept cheap places they rented out to grad students: responsible people with steady paychecks who were thankful to have a good deal and didn’t want to move.
Eric Weatherholtz@iononrecourse

Some of the happiest landlords I know keep their rents low. As one (with a dated building in an exceptional location) told me "more rent just means more taxes", and prefers getting paid in appreciation and having a 30 day termination right. There's a cost to getting market rent.
