Turning 50 next week and reflecting on my life up to this point.
Here are 4 hard earned lessons for anyone 18-30 something.
-Start investing asap. While I did invest through the years, I feel like I did it wrong. The vast majority of my money went back into my businesses. I essentially paid myself last. Lots of great ppl on X to learn short and long game investing from on X.
-Growing up without a father figure and lacking real mentors in my life I’ve always struggled to figure (literally) everything out. I grew up super financially disadvantaged (aka poor af) so I had no one to turn to about money, business, and healthy relationships. If you fall into this category you probably think you don’t need anyone because you’ve always figured it out. My mother did the best she could with what she had to work with and I would only hope I could do as well as she did given the same circumstances.
-You need a team of people who are where you’re going and finding them will be ultra important.
-Work. It’s ok to bounce around until you find what you like. While I had a hand full of jobs through my teenage years I really found my stride when I started my first business cleaning offices at night. It had nothing to do with scrubbing toilets and everything to do with me being in charge of my own destiny. I’ve had 3 jobs as an adult and was fired from 2 of them. My only regret? I quit the 3rd one before they could fire me.
Find YOUR path in the world and own it. When I say I’m UnEmployable, I mean it. I’ve been offered dozens of great jobs over the years and confidently (and politely) turn them down.
-Who you marry matters more than any other decision you’ll make in your life. Period.
Here’s the brutal truth about my life that I rarely share and most accounts never share.
I never intended to be divorced 2X, have one failed long term relationship with a mentally unhealthy person and two kids with two baby mama’s.
It’s caused lots of stress, literally cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars and has distracted me throughout the years and slowed my progress on living up to my potential.
This, I can (and will) give you a roadmap to avoid my mistakes.
First and foremost, it’s important to know what you want and MORE IMPORTANTLY know what you don’t want.
-Alignment of goals and willingness to work towards them. People say they want things they’re not willing to sacrifice and work for. Run away.
-Being happy within oneself. Lacking true happiness within will contaminate every relationship.
-How they talk about their ex. Losers love to be the victim. Even if they were treated bad it shows you who they really are, how they refer to their ex.
-Do they strive to improve themselves and actively work towards their goals? People grow at different paces and what’s most important is that both are supportive of the other’s growth.
Laziness is the cancer of success.
Wanting more for others than they want for themselves is always a losing battle, and inevitably ends in disaster with a mess to clean up. Let’s hope you don’t have a kid on the way out and be tied to that person for 18+ years.
At times it feels as if I’ve made every mistake possible while at the same time I’ve gained so much at the same time.
I have two amazing kids, a phenomenal wife it took me too long to find, and a life I’m blessed to live.
I hope this helps bring some clarity on what’s important and what to avoid.
