@disitinerant @EricRWeinstein @pmarca Perhaps, but I think we've 'burned the boats' with AI and will soon find out if we can 'conquer the island'. It's not looking good so far, IMO. Dilution of ideas will never have the same effect as the concealment of them as in the past.

@EricRWeinstein The Coase frame is right but the timing problem is brutal. You negotiate licensing terms before extraction, not after. Most of the value has already been ingested. The leverage point passed while people were still debating whether AI was real.

Self defense fits this doctrine and meets your requirements. A war of self defense against credible threats of nuclear war is better than a nuclear war, and I don't understand the question. Finally, it threads the needle between why we have said regime change wars are bad and then seem to be starting them. Because when they are hybrid self defense regime change wars, regime change wars are good and necessary. When protracted and not for war profiteers, they accomplish self defense with fewer casualties than, say, wars of domination, conquest, etc. Not quite as efficient with respect to casualties as a coup from covert ops, but that's not always in the toolbox.

We need a well-described doctrine here. That is asserted, not discussed.
It needs to make sense. It will not be pretty, fair or popular. But it cannot be ad hoc.
It would bind the nation who shoulders it, both terribly and forever.
And then we need to live that doctrine.
