Our new laws to crack down on petrol price gouging have just passed Parliament. We're doubling penalties for companies doing the wrong thing. Because there's no excuse for increasing profits at the expense of Australians.

@CharlesHerdy @VoteLewko It's pure fantasy because inner city inhabitants (the voting majority), mostly young but plenty of old fools too, don't realise that the real world requires reliable energy, and unfortunately our elected leaders are not leaders but followers chasing votes

@VoteLewko Extraordinary to see Net Zero acolytes casually state that their Utopia would remove any need for Australia to have diesel for agriculture, trucking & mining, any need for urea or fertilisers for farming. It's pure fantasy in which they have a fixed, firm belief.

The Guardian asked Guardian readers how they are affected by surging petrol prices. Guardian readers didn't disappoint. Jim (first name only and still changed by the Guardian) writes: "My concern is that our weak government consistently fails to call out the USA and Israel for their warmongering, it’s not right." The peace-loving Islamic Regime of Iran thanks you for your concern Jimbo. Joyce writes: "I’m 60, married, no children. I’ve cut back on fuel use by working from home, riding bikes instead of using the car, walking the dog round the neighbourhood instead of going to the dog park, bikes to the closest weekend market for fruit and veggies instead of driving to Woolies. I’m concerned about the Australian government supporting Trump and dragging us into world war three." Thank you for helping the planet by not having children, Joyce. Enjoy WWIII. Guardian reader Peter writes: "I would happily use my bicycle for transport, but the roads here are narrow and poorly maintained, making it dangerous and difficult to do the 40km round-trip to a supermarket without burning fuel." Come now Peter. How is that an argument against bike lanes? We're all in this together and if Clover Moore voters in the progressive inner-city of Sydney can ride their pushbikes to the local, so can a Queensland retiree. And the winner of the How Guardian are You title goes to "T Jones" of North Coast NSW T Jones, from the NSW north coast writes: "Aside from the humanitarian concerns, our reliance on fossil fuels is outrageous. If we transition to net zero, our lives would be much more sustainable." Guardian readers are an excellent source of plant food. theguardian.com/australia-news…

Voters were warned this would happen.. but it seemed no one was listening .. did anyone of you check where ON preferences were going? “Pauline Hanson says it’s “just the start”. On one level, she’s absolutely right. A large section of voters has clearly had a gutful – of rising costs, of political drift, of feeling like neither side is speaking to them. You don’t get 20% of the vote accidentally. That kind of surge is earned, seat by seat, grievance by grievance. But what unfolded in South Australia wasn’t a conservative revival. It was a mass conservative split & every time that happens, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese gets a little safer.” “Labor’s vote – 39 per cent – barely shifted. The Greens lifted their vote to 11 per cent. The Liberals, on currently counting, collapsed to 19 per cent. One Nation surged to 20 per cent. And the result? A stronger Labor government, and a weaker opposition. The Liberals were wiped out almost completely in metropolitan Adelaide, commonly finishing fourth behind Labor, One Nation and Greens. Just a handful of regional and rural seats remain. That’s the contradiction at the heart of Hanson’s momentum. The anger is real — palpable in outer suburbs and regional centres where people feel squeezed and ignored. But the political effect of that anger is the exact opposite of what many of those voters want. Because under Australia’s electoral system, protest votes don’t just register. They redistribute. Hanson can talk about “undercurrents” and a nation that’s “had a gutful”. She can claim vindication after 30 years in politics. But she also – tellingly – admits she’s “been in this position before and it all falls apart because of preferences and the rest of it”. That’s not a footnote. It is the whole story.” Excerpt From “The Hanson paradox: How a populist surge became Labor’s best friend” Rob Harris The Age apple.news/A9Pi5P7_xT-eL2… This material may be protected by copyright. “The Hanson paradox: How a populist surge became Labor’s best friend” — Rob Harris The Age apple.news/A9Pi5P7_xT-eL2…

Tomorrow South Australians head to the polls. Most voters will receive two ballot papers. A green one for the House of Assembly and a white one for the Legislative Council. But not all voters are treated equally. A select group, defined by ancestry, will also complete a third. A grey (or coloured) ballot paper to elect representatives to the First Nations Voice to Parliament for their region. When voting in a First Nations Voice election, voters will need to sign a declaration stating they are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. In the same polling booth, on the same day, some citizens will have more say than others, purely on the basis of declared ancestry. Not only is Voice voting restricted to people of a specific race, but the positions themselves are also allocated based on gender. Each region has an equal number of positions reserved for males only, females only, and one position for a person of any gender (male, female, or any other gender). It’s estimated that about 30,000 South Australians will be eligible to vote in the First Nations Voice election, yet fewer than 10% participated in the first ballot in 2024. Hardly a glowing endorsement. The Malinauskas Labor government created the SA First Nations Voice to Parliament, despite an overwhelming NO vote in the proposed federal voice (not the same thing, but similar sentiment). The Premier is doubling down on this race-based body, but at this election South Aussies have a choice. Both the Liberals and One Nation have promised to scrap it.

“What I can assure Australians is that we are as well prepared as we possibly could be.” He knows our low fuel reserve is a major news story and still thinks he can get away with flat out lying about it.
Marko Matvikov@MarkoMatvikov

The federal government neglected its obligations on fuel reserves. Australia is the only International Energy Agency member that didn’t meet its 90-day strategic reserve standard. Both Liberal and Labor failed as we haven’t been compliant for 15 years.

The Greenhouse Gas effect was first introduced in 1824. Global warming was first postulated in 1896. Einstein's theory of relativity published in 1905. Plate tectonics - first theorized in 1912. Yet, the oldest and most thoroughly proven are somehow the most controversial.

@GeoRebekah science doesn't actually KNOW global warming exists. Because they have only been measuring average global temperatures for less than a century. It is something that can only be proven over a long enough timeline. Not through crunching numbers.

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack. Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections. Now Virginia has a chance to help level the playing field. If you live in the Commonwealth, early voting begins March 6, and Election Day is on April 21. Vote YES.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 A CONSPIRACY is on foot in South Australia to prevent any challenge to establishment political power. The UNIPARTY doesn’t want Australia to change & they don’t want to fix any existing public policy problems. South Australians need to wake up to the fact that there is only a FALSE CHOICE between the ALP & the Coalition!

Chart comparing the mining boom and public sector boom. While the former led to a generational boost to living standards, the latter led to the largest drop in living standards in the developed world. By the numbers, the changes in real per capita household disposable income are: + 13% from 2003-2013 - 7% from 2022-2026

Think about this for a second. Thousands of PhDs around the world - people who spent 8-10 years in school and make $60-80K running climate models - all independently "made up" the same crisis? Meanwhile, the fossil fuel industry pulling in $4+ trillion a year in revenue is the one telling you it's all fake. Ask yourself who actually has the financial motive to lie here. The scientist driving a 10-year-old Civic to their university lab, or ExxonMobil - which, by the way, their own internal research in the 1970s-80s accurately predicted the warming we're seeing today, and they buried it? As for "wrecking the economy" — the US clean energy sector added 142,000 jobs in 2023. Texas leads the nation in wind energy production. The energy transition isn't Germany's model or nothing. And the cost of doing nothing isn't zero — ask insurers why premiums are skyrocketing in Florida, or farmers dealing with intensifying drought cycles. Those are real economic costs happening right now. "No crisis" is a comfortable position. But comfort isn't an argument.
Rod Kelly@nexenrod

Bottom line...there is no "climate crisis". We're not going to wreck our economy for a made up crisis like Germany has done.
