Something has been bothering me about Nigeria’s university admissions process and I want to put it out there. I was just talking with a younger brother and he says that JAMB exams comes this month, while WAEC comes in May. Every year, close to two million candidates sit for JAMB before many of them have even written WAEC. Some haven’t passed it. Some haven’t sat for it at all. Yet they are already being ranked for admission into universities. WAEC is the foundation. The certificate that says you finished secondary school. What every university, polytechnic and college of education demands before they will even look at you. Without it, your JAMB score is essentially worthless paper. So why are we running the ranking exam before the qualifying exam? Between 2015 and 2019, over 40% of UTME candidates had no O’Level results when they sat for JAMB. Not awaiting results. No results at all. They paid, registered, wrote the exam, and went home. Some of them probably did it more than once across multiple years. The standard defence is that SS3 students should not lose a whole year waiting for WAEC results before writing JAMB. That argument has some legs for fresh candidates in their final year. But repeat candidates already have their results sitting somewhere. Why are they allowed to join the queue without first proving they meet the minimum requirement? What this system has quietly created is a very efficient machine for collecting registration fees from people who were never going to be admitted in the first place. Nearly two million candidates. One form each. Do the math. The fix is straightforward. Move JAMB to a later window so WAEC results can land first. For repeaters specifically, make O’Level proof a hard gate before purchase of the UTME form. You cannot rank candidates for something they have not yet qualified for. Nigeria’s education administrators are smart, capable people. This is a prioritisation problem. And until someone decides that the integrity of the admissions pipeline matters more than the revenue flowing through it, we will keep having this conversation every single year @winexviv @JAMBHQ

Tinubu in Jos Confirms ‘Don't Vote for Me’ Prediction on Power Supply During the 2023 campaign, President Tinubu made a clear electoral promise: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.” When he took office in 2023, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs. Today, the electricity power supply is less than 4,000 megawatts on the average, and Nigerians are paying higher tariffs. Nigeria currently has the lowest per capita electricity consumption in the world, with a rate below 30% of the African average. Africa’s average is 617kwh, Nigeria’s is 144 kWh. This means that Nigerians consume least electricity than other Africans. In a glaring display of disregard for promises and a lack of trust, President Tinubu, during a brief airport stopover to visit grieving families of the Jos attack on Thursday, April 2, 2026, stated that one of the reasons for his 10-minute stay was that the airport had no electricity. “You have no light here I fly out in ten minutes” At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it. Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders—those lacking the capacity and compassion—who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises. A new Nigeria is POssible. -PO

A na akogheri! It is truly sad that Nigerian leadership is riddled with men like you without manner of decorum or social principles. Men who abhor truth and goodwill to humanity. And naturally your likes will fight tooth and nail to paint truth as evil. Jesus will surely lead you to repentance FFK

You have totally and completely lost your mind and this post of yours will go down in infamy as the most consequential one you ever made. What you have written today is way beyond politics and you have assaulted the senses and wounded the sensitivities of all those who lost their lives, liberty and loved ones during the struggle against fascism, dictatorship and military rule. To mock the memory of those that died fighting for democracy in the June 12th struggle and sacrificed their lives and liberty as members of NADECO in this way is unacceptable and unforgivable. Simply put it is despicable. The blood of all those that were killed by General Abacha and his goons, whom you served, shall speak against you for the rest of your life and their spirits shall haunt you from now till eternity. For this reason alone you stand accursed before the world, you shall NEVER become President of our nation and, as from today, your dwindling star shall be totally eclipsed and fade away until it is no more. God will perfect it and the blood of Jesus will seal it! (FFK)

Yesterday defenders of democracy, today's destroyers, What a shame. What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed. Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (@inecnigeria) has withdrawn recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (@ADCNig) and suspended all official engagement with the party pending ongoing litigation. This action has effectively frozen Nigeria's main opposition political party at a critical moment as it prepares to compete in the upcoming Nigerian presidential election, raising serious concerns about the opposition's ability to organize and participate fully in the democratic process. At a time when Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections, any development that disrupts political participation, creates institutional uncertainty, or undermines the perceived independence of electoral bodies must be addressed with urgency and transparency. #Nigeria is not only Africa’s largest democracy, but also a critical strategic partner of the United States in regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. The integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process is therefore of direct importance to U.S. interests and global stability. Accordingly, the firm will be presenting its concerns to members of the United States Congress and the @realDonaldTrump Administration to ensure that the importance of free, fair, and transparent democratic processes in Nigeria remains firmly on the international agenda. We call on H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT) to ensure that the conduct and outcome of the upcoming elections are beyond reproach, free from doubt, and fully reflective of the will of the Nigerian people. @HouseForeignGOP @HouseForeign @SFRCdems @SecRubio @StateDept @AsstSecStateAF @DeptofWar @HASCRepublicans @HASCDemocrats @atiku @NGRPresident @HouseNGR @NGRSenate @CNNAfrica @BBCAfrica @Reuters @AFP @ForeignPolicy

Nigerian Banks Salary Range by Position (Monthly) Nigerian banks operate a clear hierarchical structure with corresponding pay scales: Entry Level (Executive Trainees): ₦245,000 - ₦587,000 Fresh graduates entering the banking sector start here. Union Bank currently pays the highest at entry level (₦587,000), while smaller banks may start around ₦245,000. Assistant Banking Officers (ABO): ₦470,000 - ₦760,000 This is the first promotion level after completing training programs. Banking Officers (BO): ₦579,000 - ₦1,050,000 Mid-level professionals with several years of experience fall into this category. Senior Banking Officers (SBO): ₦660,000 - ₦1,100,000 Experienced bankers managing teams and complex transactions. Assistant Managers: ₦700,000 - ₦1,300,000 Senior staff with supervisory responsibilities. Contract Staff: ₦50,000 - ₦100,000 Non-permanent employees typically earn significantly less than core staff. Top Paying Banks in 2025: Research shows these banks offer the most competitive salaries: Standard Chartered Bank - Entry level: ₦514,000/month Stanbic IBTC - Entry level: ₦511,000/month (76.5% of staff earn above ₦6 million annually) Access Bank - Strong compensation across all levels Zenith Bank - ₦180,000 - ₦900,000+ depending on level GTCO (GTBank) - Competitive pay with recent 40% increase Recent Salary Adjustments Nigeria's inflation crisis (hitting 18-year highs in 2024) forced banks to significantly raise salaries: - GTCO raised salaries by 40% in October 2024 - Zenith Bank increased pay by 20-30% in early 2025 - Sterling Bank introduced a ₦75,000 monthly cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) - Collectively, major banks spent over ₦644 billion on personnel in the first half of 2025 Despite these increases, inflation has outpaced salary growth, meaning the real purchasing power hasn't improved proportionally. As a banker, What Affects Your Salary? Several factors determine how much you'll earn: 1. Bank Type: International banks (Standard Chartered, Stanbic IBTC) typically pay more than local banks. 2. Department: Technology roles earn significantly more. For example, tech staff at GTCO earn roughly ₦1 million compared to ₦720,000 for non-tech ABOs. 3. Location: Head office staff generally earn more than branch workers. 4. Employment Type: Core (permanent) staff earn substantially more than contract workers. 5. Experience: Each promotion level brings significant pay increases. Entry-level positions now start between ₦245,000-₦587,000 monthly, while experienced bankers can earn over ₦1 million. However, with Nigeria's current inflation rate above 30%, many bankers find these salaries insufficient to maintain comfortable lifestyles, despite recent increases. For those entering the field, choosing the right bank matters significantly - there's often a ₦200,000+ monthly difference between the highest and lowest-paying banks at the same level.

Can Peace Reign in the land? What have we done wrong that has brought us this level of insecurity? When can peace reign in Plateau, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kwara, Kogi and all the other troubled states of our nation, or should we just accept now that security in some parts of Nigeria has become a norm and impossible to handle? Should we just give up and accept defeat and surrender to fear while our people continue to die and our communities are ravaged and destroyed? We cannot let this become the new normal. The violence is not inevitable, and peace is not impossible, it is the failure of leadership that has made it feel otherwise. We must demand action and refuse to accept a Nigeria where some states are abandoned to chaos. Silence is not an option. We must secure our nation before more lives are lost. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

About Peter Obi (1) Today, I start a series about my encounter with @PeterObi to illustrate his excellent qualities I consider critical for transformative leadership. I am a good judge of leadership character. The week Ken Nnamani was to become Senate President I argued in a Thisday article that Ken would be great because he is a man who reads books and always asks after ideas. I used to buy him books as Harvard student and we discuss those ideas. I know that learning and leading go together. I became his special adviser and we pulled a great success at the Senate. The same with Peter Obi. He respects ideas and loves to seek it. Once he entered my office, and quickly went to the book shelf to pick up “Why Nations Fail’. Another day we were discussing why Nigeria and Indonesia are growing apart and I told him about the book of the same title by Peter Lewis. He said he was going to meet Peter Lewis and asked for the book to read. He came back with better understanding of the ideas. If you seek ideas then you can lead better. I made that bet with Ken Nnamani and he was excellent. I make the bet again. Peter Obi will be excellent as Nigerian president.
