Orwell's writings were intended as a warning to his fellow socialists to avoid falling into totalitarian propaganda traps. But they did not listen and in fact authoritarianism is inevitable when socialism is pursued. For detailed accounts of that read Socialism by Ludwig von Mises and The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich A. von Hayek. Ludwig von Mises’s Socialism is the most important critical examination of socialism ever written. Socialism is most famous for Mises’s penetrating economic calculation argument. The book contains much more however. Mises not only shows the impossibility of socialism: he defends capitalism against the main arguments socialists and other critics have raised against it. A centrally planned system cannot substitute some other form of economic calculation for market prices, because no such alternative exists. What F.A. Hayek saw, and what most all his contemporaries missed, was that every step away from the free market and toward government planning represented a compromise of human freedom generally and a step toward a form of dictatorship--and this is true in all times and places. He demonstrated this against every claim that government control was really only a means of increasing social well-being. Hayek said that government planning would make society less liveable, more brutal, more despotic. Socialism in all its forms is contrary to freedom. mises.org/library/book/r…

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this week that Britain will ban social media for kids under 16. The UK is also weighing an overnight social media curfew for under-18s… meaning 17-year-olds in England, who are able to legally drive, work, enlist, donate blood, and have a child — would not be able to watch reels after hours. Lost in the discourse is the question of how Britain will implement these policies: a state-mandated age-verification regime for everyone, including adults, requiring face scans, digital IDs, passport and credit card info. This will effectively outlaw anonymous speech, critical to a free society. Denmark is held up as proof a fossil grid can be replaced. But electricity prices have more than doubled since 2000, to now sit amongst the highest in the world. Moreover, the majority of what is labelled renewable is actually biomass, that is, wood. Trees are cut, often abroad, compressed into pellets, shipped in and then burnt for power. At the smokestack, more CO2 is released than just simply burning gas. But it is labelled as "green" because the emissions are not counted at the power plant. They are 1) assigned to the country where the trees were cut, and 2) assumed to be reabsorbed by future regrowth. So the system works like this: Cut trees, burn them, emit CO2, call it clean. Laughably, 64% of Denmark's renewable energy comes from this process.
