It argues that although the agreement avoids contentious issues such as market access, investment protection, and investor-state dispute settlement, its procedural disciplines effectively internationalise domestic regulatory practices and create new forms of binding commitments. It concludes by assessing Indiaโ€™s strategic choices at the Fourteenth Ministerial Conference (MC14). ๐Ÿ”—๐‘๐ž๐š๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฉ๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ž: ris.org.in/sites/default/โ€ฆ @MEAIndia @DoC_GoI @IndiaWTO @wto @aparnaray_ifs @SKSharma_World @Prabir_India @TheAtulKaushik @sabya_saha @pdash76 @PV_Chat @AmitK_PhD @susheco @GaurPankhuri @Vaasu_Agg @AIC_aseanindia @DakshinNews @cmec_ris @fitm14 @fisd19 #InvestmentFacilitation #TradePolicy #WTO #MC14 #WTDR2026 #GlobalTrade #WTO #MC14 #MinisterialConference #Yaounde #Cameroon #MarrakeshAgreement #EconomicGovernance #TradeAndDevelopment #InternationalTrade #TradeNegotiations #InvestmentPolicy #IFD #Multilateralism #TradeReform #Plurilateral

At the Centre for Maritime Economy and Connectivity at Research (@cmec_ris) and Research Information System for Developing Countries (@RIS_NewDelhi ) seminar on Smart Ports and Resilient Maritime Corridors-Drivers of Growth Session 1: Role of 'Resilient Maritime Corridors' brought forward key insights: Chaired by Dr Sanjeev Ranjan, Member-Adjudicatory Board for Major Ports and Former Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (@shipmin_india ) (India), emphasised the need to shift port performance metrics beyond turnaround time toward supply chain-based indicators such as reliability, integration, and continuity. Shri Ambrish Bansal, SVP, @lloydsregister, highlighted digital transformation as central to resilience, noting the development of tools like the Digital Maturity Index to assess and enhance the digital readiness of ports and maritime stakeholders. Prof Dipankar Sinha, IIFT Institute Kolkata (@iift1963), pointed out operational challenges, including delays in terminal operating systems (TOS) and uneven adoption, stressing the need to break port processes into stages: ship arrival, berth allocation, and cargo handling and improve each using data and predictive tools. Prof Prabir De(@Prabir_India ) at @cmec_ris, underlined that existing regional trade agreements lack safeguards to handle disruptions, which increase costs, delay deliveries, and weaken integration into global value chains. Mr. Afaq Hussain(@afaq1612 ), Director, Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals (BRIEF), emphasised that initiatives like IMEC have emerged in response, aiming to provide alternative connectivity options. The session concluded with valuable insights from industry leaders, underscoring the importance of digitalisation, policy coherence, and operational efficiency in building resilient maritime corridors. It highlighted the need for integrated, data-driven approaches to enhance reliability, reduce disruptions, and strengthen global trade connectivity. @shipmin_india @sarbanandsonwal @RIS_NewDelhi @SKSharma_World @Prabir_India @sujeetsamaddar @shishir_sh @dgshipping_IN @Indportsassn

Mohanty, Dr. Sabyasachi Saha (@sabya_saha) and Dr. Pankhuri Gaur (@GaurPankhuri) With constant pressure from global disturbances such as rising unilateral tariffs and geopolitical disruptions, the world economy is at risk of slowing down. Though several developing countries have been coping with this global turmoil, certain anomalies are putting pressure on the small and developing countries to catch up in the short run. These anomalies include low convergence of the Global North and the Global South in services trade, unstable FDI convergence and slow decline of development aid. For the rebound of the world economy, while ensuring credibility and inclusivity, a subsistence push should be given in trade and investment with the support of a certain country-grouping, as identified in this policy brief, within the WTO framework. The upcoming MC14 provides a valuable platform for Members to discuss such pressing issues. ๐Ÿ”—๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜† ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ๐˜: ris.org.in/sites/default/โ€ฆ @MEAIndia @DoC_GoI @IndiaWTO @wto @aparnaray_ifs @SKSharma_World @Prabir_India @TheAtulKaushik @pdash76 @AmitK_PhD @susheco @AIC_aseanindia @DakshinNews @cmec_ris @fitm14 @fisd19 #RISPolicyBrief #GlobalSouth #GlobalNorth #WTOMC14 #MC14 #TradeForRecovery #InclusiveTrade #FDI #DevelopmentMatters #GlobalRecovery #WTOReforms #EmergingEconomies #TradePolicy #Multilateralism #SustainableGrowth #EconomicResilience #GlobalTrade

The Brief examines the evolving debate on WTO reform and its implications for industrial policy space, particularly from the perspective of developing countries like India. It situates the renewed global interest in industrial policy within the broader context of geoeconomic competition, technological transformation, and supply chain restructuring, where major economies are increasingly deploying subsidies and strategic state interventions to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities. It analyses emerging reform proposals under the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (ASCM) and highlights concerns that tighter subsidy disciplines, expanded definitions, and stronger enforcement mechanisms could disproportionately constrain the policy space available to developing countries that are still undergoing structural transformation. The brief underscores the structural asymmetries in income levels, technological capabilities, and global value chain participation between advanced and developing economies, arguing that industrial policy remains a critical instrument for late industrialisers seeking to upgrade manufacturing capacity and move up the value chain. It proposes a set of development-sensitive pathways for WTO reform, including calibrated flexibility in subsidy disciplines, strengthened transparency mechanisms, and objective criteria to distinguish between systemic dominance and developmental catch-up. As discussions move toward MC14, the brief highlights the need for a balanced reform framework that preserves the credibility of the multilateral trading system while ensuring that developmental policy space remains available to emerging economies pursuing industrialisation and structural transformation. ๐Ÿ”—๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜† ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ๐˜: ris.org.in/sites/default/โ€ฆ @MEAIndia @DoC_GoI @IndiaWTO @wto @aparnaray_ifs @SKSharma_World @AIC_aseanindia @DakshinNews @cmec_ris @fitm14 @fisd19 #WTOReform #WorldTradeOrganization #MultilateralTradingSystem #GlobalTradePolicy #IndustrialPolicy #PolicySpace #MC14 #StructuralTransformation #Industrialization #Subsidies #ASCM #TradeNegotiations #DevelopingCountries #EconomicDevelopment
