The Home Office is running an Asylum Housing Pilot (part of a £500 million scheme) where local councils receive funding to buy, build new, or refurbish council properties specifically for temporary accommodation of asylum seekers. The explicit goal: move people out of expensive hotels (still costing taxpayers millions per week) and end hotel use by 2029. Around 200 councils expressed interest; confirmed participants/shortlisted include Brighton & Hove, Hackney, Peterborough, Thanet and Powys. The pilot aims to deliver up to 900 homes under the scheme. Properties are leased back to the Home Office initially for asylum dispersal before potentially entering council stock. Asylum seekers (while claims are pending) remain ineligible for mainstream social housing waiting lists. British families: still over 1.3 million households on social housing waiting lists nationwide. Adrian Hughes, 36, recently living in Preston appeared at Preston Crown Court where he admitted multiple sexual offences; - During May 2025, being a person 18 or over, for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification, intentionally communicated with a 13-year-old girl. The communication being sexual, namely by discussing meeting up with her and touching her sexually and saying that he would teach her about sex. - Also in May 2025, being a person 18 or over, intentionally attempting to cause or incite a 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity, namely by asking for nude images of her and asking to meet for sexual activity - During June 2025, being a person 18 or over, intentionally communicated with a 12-year-old girl, the communication being sexual, namely by asking her to meet up to engage in sexual activity and sending an image of his naked manhood. The court was told that the two girls were in fact police decoys. Hughes will be sentenced on 24th April, and must register as a sex offender immediately. Source UK Database.
