The U.S. tax system is based on citizenship rather than fiscal residence, so Americans abroad still owe U.S. tax on cap gains. Most other countries (eg Germany) tax based on residence, not citizenship. So Germans (or other non-Us persons) that are fiscal residents in NL are not taxed on capital gains

I'm researching our next city to live in Europe, here are my criteria: - (mostly) walkable (also with a baby stroller..) - good level of english - over 500k people (I lived in berlin -> then small 40k village in cyprus-> I need the city again, at least nearby) - nature in and around the city - major airport - good startup ecosystem - good english level - (mostly) sunny climate - tax system that doesn't destroy you Right now this is the list I have with these criteria - Madrid 🇪🇸 - Lisbon 🇵🇹 - Barcelona 🇪🇸 I lived in Cyprus the last year and people speak amazing english here, so that's def a big plus for a country that has that Cyprus is nice in many ways, but just way too small and village-like for me If I don't care that much about the weather (still not sure about this), there are these options: - Amsterdam🇳🇱 - Berlin 🇩🇪(love hate relationship, lived there 11 years, want to be sure before I come back) - Munich 🇩🇪 (I like that its so close to mountains, Italy etc) Switzerland is also nice but I think it's a bit too polished and structured for my liking. Might come there later in life ;). I still have a small small voice in my head that tells me to check out the US more. My main problem is that it's SO FAR away from my family. What we'll do next year is to say 2 months in a couple of cities/places and then decide Might also come 2 months to the US just to get a better picture, it's possible that I won't like it as a place to live. I also have accepted the fact, that there is NO perfect place to begin with. There's always up and downsides.

@itsolelehmann @art_is_art Spain tax system is very aggressive and Spaniards are very hostile to entrepreneurs and wealthy people. It’s a country where lifestyle and “work-life balance” are the priority, mediocrity is rewarded and excellence is punished.

@jsrmalvarez @Magicalspain It’s not really true. In Italy wine is perferred - but it’s not that people are having a Vega-Sicilia for the aperitivo. Youngsters will get together and drink very cheap prosecco or wine-based drinks like spritz, americano and a long etcétera just like spaniards have a beer.

@Magicalspain For a beer it only takes 5 min and optionally, some crisps or peanuts. For wine you need a 3 course meal and a couch for the 2 hour siesta coming after. Also, back a generation people drove stoned and now the allowed alcohol while driving is near zero.

It’s crazy how Spain abandoned wine for beer in one generation.

Vehicular manslaughter seems to light a description for what the driver willfully and intentionally did. Life in prison without parole for both of them. No bail until the trial. Or if they're naturalized citizens - Revoke it NOW and deport - If on a visa - revoke and deport. Also deport all family members!

@bankless @RyanSAdams This is pathetic. You are basically trying to copy bitcoin narratives (“digital gold”, “1 eth = 1 eth”). Only fools will fall for it.

@barackomaba @BitcoinErrorLog You can use cBTC collateral on AAVE. It’s backed by Coinbase’s Bitcoin and it’s permissionless, the closest you can get to native btc on eth. It can be argued that both Ethereum and Coinbase are “too big too fail”

@BitcoinErrorLog The risk in the deal for me is more about counterparty risk. If it were 100% secure it would at least be at least a deal worth considering. Bitcoin has average growth YoY of 50%+ so losing 15% APY isn't so bad, would have to drastically slow down over a 30 year period.

They say don't sell, and instead, borrow against your BTC. 1. Lenders charge a few % points as one-time fee. 2. You still need also to pay 15% APR. 3. They want double the loan amount as collateral. 4. You can be margin-called, requiring more BTC. 5. It isn't your BTC anymore, really. If you do this to get money for a down payment on a home, the deal looks pretty meh to me, compared to just selling half as much BTC and paying the taxes... Is this just a moonboi thing? Like, you have to assume your collateral will go up, not down, in value? But 15% APR long-term is quite substantial! What am I missing?

Nassim is a serial flip-flopper. He used to be a deadlift maxi and long steady state cardio denier, and now he is a zone2, cycling maxi. He is very talented at taking others people’s ideas, put them together and tell a cohesive and coherent story in a very compelling way. That’s awesome. But he thinks he is much more intelligent than he is.

My take on this is that Taleb feels it is righteous to fight against Bryan Johnson's philosophy of 'non-stoic neurotic over-optimization' since others may become interested it in instead of following a stoic anti-fragile philosophy. Assuming Nassim truly believes what he writes that life will throw unexpected things and that, as an individual, you can only be ready for through stoicism and anti-fragility/redundance + that society is only anti-fragile because of the fragility of its individuals, it makes sense that he take a strong stance against this philosophy. I don't think this was Taleb attacking Bryan on what he is doing for himself but the way he spreads to others his message of over optimizing his lifestyle for longevity in a seemingly fragile and non-lindy way.

I don’t get the “disgust” towards @bryan_johnson. He seems to be putting his own skin in the game of others. He’s not going to live forever, but the experiments on himself might reveal something that helps others live longer or better. x.com/i/trending/187…

When I met my now wife she lived in a different city. Options to visit were either a 50 minutes flight or a 4 hours train. I always chose the train. Train station was 10 minutes walk from both our houses. No need to drive 30 minutes to/from the airport, no need to go through security, and i could actually focus on working or relaxing while on the train. Door-to-door travel time was a little bit longer by train (maybe 30 minutes?) but the difference in convenience and comfort was massive.
