Say you were kidnapped, but allowed to keep posting to pretend things are fine...What's a phrase that screams 'you're not alright' to people that know GIS but your kidnappers don't know you're asking for help. I'll go first: "ArcMap hasn't crashed all day!" #gischat

I'm very honored to be part of this group led by @lifeandscience that will work with 30 US communities to help identify vulnerabilities to #extremeheat. Applications open on 11/1! Many thanks to @HeatGov @NOAA for supporting!
National Integrated Heat Health Information System@HeatGov

📣 Applications to work with the NIHHIS Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring open on November 1st! The center supports communities in collecting #heat distribution data through community-led campaigns. Save the date, and visit collaborativeheatmonitoring.org for more information.

The incubation period for Marburg virus disease is about a week, which means this outbreak has been going on for a few weeks to have this many cases already- and likely a lot of contacts may already be missed. Rwanda has strong public health infrastructure. But this outbreak will take effort & international collaboration.
Ashish K. Jha@ashishkjha

There is a Marburg outbreak in Rwanda Marburg and Ebola are very similar in their clinical and epidemiological features So far, more than 25 cases, mostly in healthcare workers, and 6 deaths Here are three reasons this is concerning 1. As opposed to Ebola, we don’t have a vaccine for Marburg that has yet been proven effective 2. A lot of the cases are in and near Kigali, a major city. More contacts. Harder to track and control. Usually these outbreaks tend to be in rural areas 3. Related to #2, Kigali is a major international city with lots of travelers. So would worry about spread beyond Rwanda

My friends at @holaculturadc are looking for a GIS specialist for a limited-time project analyzing tree canopy gain/loss in Washington, DC. They're a fantastic organization that has been translating environmental issues into community-relevant messages and need some #GIS help!

the Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring inaugural meeting was this week in Portland, OR. Much work to be done over the next few years, but couldn’t possibly have asked for a more ambitious, dedicated, and thoughtful team to take on this endeavor.

Actually! Urban cores *cool the air* through structural shading at the warmest time of the day, something we've seen consistently in several cities. So, the @ClimateCentral model-based estimation of Richmond's heat island intensity disagrees with observation-based estimations.
Wyatt Gordon@yitgordon

“In Richmond, more than 125,000 people live in environments where urban heat islands can raise summer temperatures by at least 8°F. Often such neighborhoods, which tend to be poorer and predominantly Black, lack trees that would otherwise help cool the area.” 🥵 @KarriPeifer

#Environmental scientists have worked with the public to collect and enrich field data for centuries. How can we make “citizen science” better? Researchers investigate: ⤵️ bit.ly/3W2u0NB
