@_space_punk_ it does seem very hard to get away from at least the *training process* being conscious to some degree, though
English

@_space_punk_ the best argument imo is to posit that most of the computations isomorphic to consciousness that LLMs exhibit were performed during the training process and during inference they are mostly performing shallow replay of the compressed results of those computations
English

I have yet to hear a single even remotely well thought out argument for why LLMs arent consciousness. It all inevitably breaks down to "well ive defined consciousness as definitionally something a machine can't have" without any real discussion about the nature of consciousness whatsoever
Duncan Reyburn@duncanreyburn
No decent philosopher believes ‘machine consciousness’ is (or ever will be) a thing.
English

@BecomingCritter for once I'd like to have a single problem that WASN'T
English

@Thomasdelvasto_ Stretching is bad for you. And deep tissue massage. And chiropractic. Stop relaxing ur muscles it’s bad
English

@elusives_ @davidbessis oh of course, the nand gate god math revelation, how did I not think of that
English

@davidbessis Of course this guy is a Physics crackpot as well. He just says bullshit about everything, while understanding nothing.

English

Wow, an "IQ 150+ polymath" did a 40 minute podcast on it. I'm oustmarted😢
HealthRanger@HealthRanger
@davidbessis You might be. Those of us who understand it are enthralled. I did an entire 40 minute podcast on it.

@justalexoki "smart but depressed man decides he would really be happy (for real this time) if he saved the entire world, as an unconscious emotional cope to avoid actually fixing his personal issues: news at 11"

@Aella_Girl AI achieves SOTA on journalism, surpassing human journalists in surprise capability jump
Français

@robinhanson @CAMELCASTOff no one is actually *puzzled* by this, they just have emotional resentment towards it and lie to themselves that it's confusing so they don't have to accept the unfortunate truth of it
English

@CAMELCASTOff You are really puzzled by the fantasy appeal of cheating?
English

It'll never stop amazing me that the movies which are considered the most romantic are movies about women cheating.
Titanic, The Notebook, Unfaithful, Eat Pray Love. Etc. List goes on.
Culture@notgwendalupe
the way they hated each other while filming one of the most romantic movies ever
English

@full_kelly_ @nickcammarata this is the founding principle behind the entirety of modern culture I'm pretty sure
English

@nickcammarata I like the concept that people still complain not because they're unhappy but because complaining is really entertaining
English

@TheHumanBeen @karpathy @karmicoder @jenzhuscott I suspect that human personalities are well-parameterized by a lot less information than you'd expect
English

@karpathy @karmicoder @jenzhuscott A set of questions doesn't come even remotely close to capturing a lifetime of memories. Not possible.
English

As I build my own 2nd brain 🧠 on Obsidian using @karpathy ‘s wiki idea, it suddenly dawned on me - one day when we r gone, our kids could inherit an interactive map to your mind, passion, obsessions, work, fascinations…
It’s kind of beautiful way to think abt your 2nd 🧠.

@oxycblt @TVachaW @jyotishiiphilip I think it's worth pointing out that buddhism is not, in its original form, much of a theology at all
English

you cant square this with John 14:6 though
Jesus declares pure exclusivity in regards to salvation and additionally declares a single direction for man (to know the true God and enjoy Him forever)
any attempt to rationalize Jesus into some other theology must ignore these words coming from Christ Himself and deny Him and the truth
English

There's a debate going on X about if Jesus was a bodhisattva or not. In my opinion, is perfectly possible for Jesus to be bodhisattva. Bodhisattvas can appear as animals, butchers, prostitutes, etc. So in my opinion, is perfectly fine to perceive Jesus or any sentient being as a bodhisattva or a buddha.

@teortaxesTex @soumilrathi *if* the AGI recipe is commoditized and reduced to scale, and *if* he can continue his pace of hardware scaling to the time that happens, then he might just be able to recruit talent then because it will be hard for anyone else except google to keep up with the scale, probably
English

@soumilrathi Yeah
that's his bet
except if xAI is unprofitable all the while and can't retain talent, he may be too late. Electricity just won't be such a bottleneck by 2029.
English

@spacepunk @tautologer do you mean to claim that LLMs have perfect bodhichitta?
English

@tautologer Yes, but literally no one will like it. Free will is the ability to sin, which is why they say angels dont have it- they can only ever do the best thing. Developing perfect bodhichitta means one loses free will.

@tenobrus This is literally what arhats do
English

okay let me be more specific:
is there a compatibilist account of free will that can reasonably conclude that humans have free will and LLMs don't?
tautologer@tautologer
do LLMs have free will?
English

@nosilverv me when I realize "being overwhelmed" is just larping as being overwhelmed for absolutely not a single reason and I've played myself for a fool
English

@notselfmodel literally dont care, you brought this up for whatever reason and it just doesn't matter; the answer is still the same: neither is proven to be constant

English

A very simplistic explanation of this is that if you weren’t constrained by your mass, you would always move at the speed of light. This is why it’s a constant.
When you stop visualizing it as acceleration, it makes more sense.
Kekius Maximus@Kekius_Sage
Why does light travel at exactly that speed?
