After more than 25 years of dedicated service, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the retirement of Deputy Brian Harris and K9 Ava. During his career, Deputy Harris served across many divisions within our office, including Detention, House Arrest, the Training Division, and Patrol, as well as 14 years with the WCSO K9 Unit. In that time, he helped develop and guide the program through his leadership, experience, and commitment to preparing both deputies and K9 teams for the demands of the job. K9 Ava faithfully served alongside Deputy Harris for six years, helping ensure the safety of our deputies, partner agencies, and the community. Beyond her work in the field, Ava became a beloved presence in our community. “Deputy Harris has been an integral part of the success of our K9 program for more than a decade. His dedication to training, mentorship, and service has left a lasting legacy within this office,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “K9 Ava has been an outstanding partner and a true ambassador for our agency, earning the admiration of our community. They will both be greatly missed.” Please join us in wishing Deputy Harris and K9 Ava a well-deserved retirement and many years of happiness in this next chapter. #WCSO #Deputies #Retirement #K9 #K9Unit #K9Retirement #ThankYouForYourService #ProudSheriff

Our gratitude to @oaklandsheriff and all local agencies who train together and constantly prepare for these attacks. Due to these efforts, no kids or staff were injured. We pray for the head of security in the hospital and the Deputies and officers admitted for smoke inhalation.

DRONE SUCCESS STORY! LVMPD officers responded to a report of a battery near Las Vegas and Elvis Presley Boulevards. As officers headed to the area, a drone was quickly deployed and located the suspect from above. Even after the suspect attempted to discard his shirt to avoid identification, the drone maintained visual contact and guided officers directly to his location, leading to a quick and safe apprehension. A clear example of how technology is helping officers respond faster and more effectively. Event: LLV260200110359

Our thoughts are with our @BCSONM family and the loved ones of Sergeant Schlattman. We will take the watch from here.
BCSO (Sheriff) NM@BCSONM

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is devastated to announce the line of duty death of Sergeant Michael Schlattman, who died this evening as a result of injuries sustained during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 eastbound near the 170. Sergeant Schlattman was hired by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office on April 16, 2012, and was promoted to Sergeant on July 13, 2024. During his career, he served the people of Bernalillo County in multiple assignments, including time as a detective in Special Investigations and Auto Theft, and as a task force officer with the United States Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. At the time of his death, Sergeant Schlattman was assigned as a Sergeant in the East Mountains. On the evening of February 23, 2026, just before 5:00 p.m., Sergeant Schlattman called over the radio to advise he was conducting a traffic stop. While he was outside the vehicle, a semi truck struck the rear of his department issued vehicle, ultimately pinning him beneath. Sergeant Schlattman died on scene as a result of his injuries. This is a heartbreaking loss for the Schlattman family, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, and the entire community we serve. Sergeant Schlattman was the kind of leader deputies hope for and families trust. He was known for being present, involved, and relentless in his support of others. He was not a supervisor who stayed behind a desk. He was consistently out in the field, finding the work, backing his deputies, answering calls for service, and pushing to be proactive. He was the steady voice and the steady presence that made everyone around him better. “This is every agency’s worst nightmare, and tonight it is ours,” said Sheriff John Allen. “Sergeant Schlattman was a servant leader and a protector in the truest sense. He was the kind of supervisor who never asked a deputy to do something he would not do himself. Our hearts are broken, and we are asking our community to carry this family, and this agency, in your prayers.” The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s support and compassion as we navigate the days ahead. We ask the community to keep Sergeant Schlattman’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask for patience and respect as investigators continue their work and as the family is given space to grieve. Information regarding memorial services will be shared as soon as it is available and the family is ready.

Inmates in our care receive exceptional healthcare — far exceeding the community standard. As @KTLA reports, @SBCSD custody staff stopped narcotics-soaked mail from entering an IE jail, likely saving lives. The root causeof many in-custody deaths is drugs entering facilities. Prop 47 enabled narcotics use with impunity; Prop 36 is correcting course. Stop the drugs. Save lives. ktla.com/news/inland-em…
