I bought my United Airlines ticket from Chicago to L.A. for the 1984 Olympics exactly 365 days early. I paid a normal price. A month later, United calls: "We just realized the Olympics are in LA in 1984, so we've gotta double your price!" "Nope. We have a deal. Sorry."

@lowflyingsquab As a citizen of the USA you can receive an entry stamp into Thailand allowing you a 60 day stay, this can then be extended for a further 30 days at a local immigration office giving 90 days visa free entry.

I found my e-visa in this morning’s email haul. It took a total of 27 days from the time I submitted the application—20 days for the BOI to approve, and 7 days for the LA consulate to issue. Not bad. Look out Thailand—here I come (in a couple of months, anyway [83 sunrises]).

I think a new 'ism' is about to enter into the English language in addition to:- Freudian Slip: An unintentional error in speech revealing unconscious thoughts Malapropism: (e.g., "optical delusion" for "optical illusion"). Spoonerism: (e.g., "blushing crow" for "crushing blow"

Friend just sent this to me asking if it’s true. We’re sitting in Siam Center sharing an iced cappuccino and chocolate cake with ice cream. The AC is blasting cold air. The malls and trains are all air conditioned and filled with tourists. Bangkok is buzzing with activity. It’s Friday afternoon.

If somebody has their phone on speaker in public it is an invitation for anyone nearby to join the conversation. Be polite and say hello and ask about the weather or something equally mundane. Accept the invitation to socialise.

Why do people in restaurants think it’s fine to have loud conversations on FaceTime? It’s incredibly rude and intrusive. Just enjoy your lunch. And let me enjoy mine without having to hear from your auntie in America.

@DerrickEvans4WV A question for you guys driving automatics. Do you shift into neutral or into park while waiting for the lights or do you just sit with your foot on the brake?

I get so annoyed by people who just sit there when the light turns green. Sit there for 3-4 seconds then instead of giving it gas, just let off the break and barely move for the next 100 feet. When the light turns green….. GO

Machines such as this can now be used freely on cycle lanes designed and built for pushbikes. This is a huge backward step, after decades of campaigns for segregation of muscle-powered bikes from engine-powered vehicles.

@onlineinsane I am slightly older than a boomer and at the age of seven in the UK we were dealing with currency calculation in LSD (12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shilling to a pound) whilst dealing with weights in ounces, pound, quarter, hundredweight and tons.

What is the point of hotel check-in desk people anymore? Why isn't this 100% automated? Verify your ID, pay, get entry code. Why are humans still doing this?

Yep, machines could spit out your hotel key card. If there's a problem, the guest could get the security guard to help them (replacement of a broken phone for example). Re-assignment of room due to other issues could be done remotely over a toll free number. Even ID verification could be done at a scan kiosk. The front door could lock and have a pin pad system, where pin numbers are automatically assigned for guests.

@otokyo__ It needs a pair of plastic sandals near the bathroom door. Many Asian shower/toilets are like this and if you need the toilet before the floor dries you need something for your feet.

@GadSaad @Budget @bbb_us Sounds like you should make a section 75 claim against your credit card. They are jointly liable for any false charges.

It is truly extraordinary. @budget is running a criminal enterprise. The @bbb_us should launch an investigation against the company. This is the SECOND time that they were caught charging us a "fuel charge fee" when the tank is always ALREADY full. I take photos as proof, and I get it confirmed in person by the attendant. They just charged $182, which they then had to reimburse because my wife caught it. Let me tag the @FBI. Perhaps they can refer it to the relevant authorities.

Bored with hotel booking sites... too many tricks. Now I usually book directly with the hotel. However, found a reasonable deal on Agoda for Songkran week in Bangkok. Proceeded to book, but the price suddenly jumps by almost B2k for 'other charges'. The other charges turn out to be a Grand Songkran Diner. No info, no menu, no option to remove. Closed the website and didn't look back.

@bangkoklad I suspect that everyone is now running around with a full tank whereas previously they would not fill up until it was down to quarter tank. Thailand has fuel but it's in the vehicles.

We order a new Ford Maverick. Dealer calls and said they got financing approved but it’s a high rate so they recommend we put more down and in the future get approved for the Ford credit line to make things easier. I ask the rate. 12.99% I say let’s pause on the deal and let me make a few calls. 5 mins later the phone rings. They magically got it down to 8.49%. Don’t let these guys try to screw you over.

There should be a law, that you can’t talk on speaker phone in a public place. Massive shout out to “Becky” from Bidvest, for prompting this post, having just had a 20 minute call with her boss, on speaker phone, loudly, next to me in the Slow Lounge. This is the reason aliens fly straight by the earth people!

As a developer, have you ever wondered: You type a 16‑digit card number and the form instantly says “Invalid card number”. There are billions of possible numbers. How the hell is that check that fast?
