Growing up is realising that in Titanic, Rose decides to throw away a $250 million pendant in memory of an unemployed man with whom she had sex one time. Meanwhile, her husband worked hard all his life to maintain her and give her and her children a life of luxury, and he would surely have also appreciated the inheritance and lived peacefully. She could have also given the pendant to her granddaughter, who took care of her her whole life. The real villain of the movie was Rose.

So let me get this straight. If a black dude shoots me while trying to rob me or a mentally ill person who thinks they are the masters of biological reality shoots my child at school, can I sue the maker of the firearm? Just want to make sure I am preparing for the most statistically likely scenarios.

Public shaming is a pretty good way to enforce a standard of behaviour. We all grew up with “be a tidy kiwi” not littering is a very important part of our culture. I hope he’s learned his lesson, pays his fine for illegal dumping and never does that shit again. Nothing makes kiwis come for you like littering.

🚩Immigrant dumper update: The Indian dude who got caught littering has gone to the Police and Netsafe to complain about the online circulation of the footage and fears for his ‘safety’. He’s also claiming the person who recorded the footage broke his mirror - yeah right. Who’s going to believe this pond scum? The picture shows his mirror with a missing cover - like he has gone home and unscrewed it - wouldn’t you take a picture of the mirror immediately after they broke it? Where are the pieces? The picture is taken at his home in the drive by the looks of it It’s just fabrication from a little grub. His excuse for dumping his rubbish was “The recycling centre was closed and I thought this would just decompose on the side of the road” The individual who is only identified by a NZ Indian media outlet as ‘Mr A’ - presumably A is for asshole, says Netsafe ‘can’t take down all the videos online’ - why are they able to take down ANY of the footage? Police have confirmed they are investigating. He’s complained that the video has gone viral an ‘has even reached his home country of India’….and the problem is?….poor little victim is having a wah wah. Biff him out of the country, we do NOT want these people here. indianweekender.co.nz/news/indian-ma…

@BlackRoses_888 @qpe @MorbidKnowledge According to the 2009 Cancer journal study? That's been contradicted and challenged often? That self admitted making numbers as bad as possible? That counted divorces initiated by women with mild cancer scares as men leaving the women? You're just a liar with a shitty agenda.

In 2006, in New Zealand, a 17-year-old boy named Liam Ashley made what his parents thought was a small but serious mistake — he took their car without permission. It was something a lot of teenagers might do in a moment of rebellion, but his parents wanted to teach him a lesson. They pressed charges, expecting it to scare him straight. When bail was offered, they refused it, believing a short stay in a youth detention center would make him realize the consequences of his actions. But the system failed them — and it failed Liam in the worst possible way. Instead of being placed in a safe youth facility, Liam was put into an adult prison van during transport. He wasn’t separated from violent offenders. He wasn’t protected. Inside that van, he was locked in a tiny cage with a dangerous, mentally unstable prisoner named George Charlie Baker, a man who was known for violence and unpredictable behavior. The guards never checked. The van drove for over an hour, with no one watching, no one listening. By the time they opened the doors, it was too late. Liam had been brutally a**acked and strangled. He was found unconscious, his body lifeless. The boy his parents thought they were disciplining — the one who was supposed to spend a few days learning a lesson — never came home. The case shattered New Zealand. It exposed deep flaws in the prison transport system, the lack of safety protocols, and how easily bureaucracy could destroy a life. Liam’s parents were haunted by their decision. What was meant to be a wake-up call became a tragedy they would carry forever. Liam Ashley’s death became a symbol of how a single system error — and a single decision — can turn a lesson into a lifetime of regret.

@SamaHoole The ale wasn't a luxury. It was cheap and gross and unpleasant to drink. Full of sediment, unstrained, more viscous than modern drinks. Less alcohol. No hops, so not sedative like modern - instead a stimulant. Also, frequently slightly hallucinogenic. They drank it every day.

Robert is having a feast day today. There are approximately 40 to 50 of these per year in medieval England, spread across the liturgical calendar. Saints' days, holy days, the major festivals. Modern people hear "forty feast days a year" and imagine a man who is basically always at a buffet. Robert would like a word. 6:00am - Up. Robert is going to Mass this morning because it is the Feast of St John the Baptist and the Church is not asking. He walks two miles to the church. The church is cold. It is always cold. God, apparently, does not heat his buildings. 8:00am - Back from church. Agnes has made a slightly different pottage. There is no meat in it. There is a religious reason for this. Robert does not fully understand the theological reasoning. He understands the outcome, which is that on a day technically designated as celebratory, he is eating oat pottage with a piece of hard cheese on top. 10:00am - Robert is still working. The feast day is a holy day, not a holiday. The distinction matters enormously and Robert is living it. The lord's grain doesn't stop needing to be managed because a saint was beheaded in the second century. Robert gets to the field slightly later than usual and works until slightly later than usual to compensate. 1:00pm - The feast meal. Robert's household has a piece of salt fish. It is tough and strongly flavoured and required soaking since yesterday to become this edible. There is rye bread. There is a small amount of peas boiled with some herbs from Agnes's garden. By the standards of a Tuesday in February, this is a feast. Robert eats it slowly. He is grateful for the fish. 3:00pm - Robert's neighbour John has ale. This is the closest the day gets to a celebration. They sit outside in the late afternoon with their cups. They discuss the harvest. The weather. The lord's new tax assessment. The general sensation that things are not improving. 9:00pm - Sleep. The forty feast days per year were, in practice, days when Robert had slightly better food than the worst days, was not flogged for not working (usually), and got to go to a very cold building to hear Latin he didn't understand. Eight hundred years later, someone will describe the medieval feast calendar as "a rich tradition of communal celebration and seasonal abundance." Robert is asleep. He has work at dawn.

You are not violent and not prepared for violence. Most people who say they are have never been around it. I have seen thousands of people die, people bleeding into my shoes off the stretcher begging not to die, familial screams echoing in the hall way. You might think I’m saying I’m prepared for it but I’m not. 3 years ago there was a car that flipped over 3 times after an accident right in front of me so I pulled over to help. It took 3 guys to rip the door open and open the car. Inside was a dead passenger and a driver with his bone sticking through his leg, pupil blown, barely breathing. 15 years of critical care and trauma experience meant nothing when I had no tools in an uncontrolled unsafe environment. I provided rescue breaths until paramedics got there. Paramedics that might not ever show up if shit really hit the fan. So Claire, if you welcome this into your world over foreign policy I really do believe that you should be deported. You are a dumb naive women with no sense for anything remotely uncomfortable so please shut the fuck up.

@TheLaurenChen @aakashgupta The worst is when you are asked to tip before the service is provided, ie a delivery driver. If you tip ahead of time and they show up an hour late, you have no recourse. And if you put zero for a tip, with the intention of tipping in cash, then you get spit on your pizza.

American restaurants are legally allowed to pay servers $2.13/hour. In Japan, tipping is rude. In Australia, servers make $24/hour before tips. In Denmark, $25/hour with full benefits. In those countries, a server handwriting a demand for more money on a receipt would be absurd. The restaurant already paid them. In America, the restaurant doesn't. So 20% from the customer fills the gap. That's the system. Leaving less means the server worked your table for two dollars an hour. This receipt is what that looks like in practice. $525 check. The restaurant collected every dollar. Printed "gratuity: $0.00" on the bill. Paid the server $2.13/hour. Then left the building. The customer left $60 in cash. That's 11%. The server handwrote a note: "I was expecting more like $120. Thanks." The note looks entitled until you do the math. At $2.13/hour, a four-hour dinner shift pays the server $8.52 from the restaurant. The difference between a $60 tip and a $120 tip is the difference between $17/hour and $32/hour for skilled service on a $525 tab. Everyone is arguing about the server's attitude. Nobody is asking why a business that just collected $525 is paying its worker two dollars. The server and the customer are fighting over who covers payroll. The restaurant owner is nowhere in the conversation. Already won.

Some people, particularly on the Left, believe that Trump's collapsing poll numbers with the under-30s are because he's not Progressive enough for them. That is not the reason why. His approval is collapsing with younger voters because they're still struggling economically. At best, they've been treading water since he took office, but that means very little to them because their quality of life took an absolute nosedive under Biden. We live in a decidedly non-ideological age. Younger people disapprove of Trump not for ideological reasons, but because of a combination of quality of life, vibes, and the fact that he appears to have not gone far enough in taking a sledgehammer to the existing DC establishment. What younger people want more than anything is to be able to get a well-paying job, buy a house, start a family, and see Washington DC burn to the ground from their front porch. Insofar as they see these things are not happening, they'll continue to sour on anyone and everyone in politics who comes along.

Four people died in the wreck, including the pilot, Michael Perdue, who was Laney Perdue’s father. Laney Perdue, age 11, survived and became the only person pulled alive from the crash. First responders found her conscious, speaking clearly, and suffering multiple fractures and internal injuries. Doctors treated a broken jaw with surgical wiring, and she spent weeks in recovery care. Family members and media reports state that her father shielded her during impact. I cannot confirm that action, since investigators found no physical proof to establish it as fact. Laney later regained mobility, returned home, and resumed normal daily activities after medical clearance.

In a 2021 plane crash in Michigan, 11-year-old Laney Perdue survived after her father wrapped her in a bear hug at impact, shielding her with his body, he passed from his injuries, she lived. On November 13, 2021, Mike Perdue and his 11-year-old daughter Laney boarded a small commuter plane bound for Beaver Island on Lake Michigan. As the plane approached Welke Airport, it crashed on landing, kil**ng the pilot and two other passengers. Laney's last memory before impact was her father grabbing her and holding her really, really tight. All of Laney's five broken bones were on one side of her body, the side that wasn't against her father. Her mother Christie believes the embrace saved her daughter's life.
