#WATCH || A school-going minor girl was swept away by flash floodwaters in Tuibong, Churachandpur district, following heavy rainfall on Thursday, triggering an extensive search operation by local volunteers and civil society organisations. The minor girl has been identified as Lamboikim, a student of Radhakrishnan Foundation School. According to reports, the girl was returning home from school when she was caught in the strong flood current generated by the downpour. She has remained missing since the incident, prompting a large-scale search effort along the Tuitha River. Since then, an extensive search operation has been carried out with the initiative of the Kuki Khanglai Lawpi (KKL), a philanthropic organisation, the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur, and local youth clubs. Various philanthropic organisations, such as the Hmar Youth Association, also joined the search today. The search has been conducted along the Tuitha River since yesterday and continued until late last night. The operation is still ongoing today. However, equally troubling has been the apparent inaction of the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) under the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The District Disaster Response Force (DDRF), consisting of members from departments such as PHED, Health, Fire Services, Police, Electricity, Public Works, and staff from the 11 sub-divisional offices, was established with the aim of providing quick and immediate response during disasters in the district. The district administration also provides helpline numbers on its official website for emergency assistance. When asked about any assistance from the district administration or the DDRF regarding the search operation for the missing girl, a local youth club leader said they had not received any assistance or support from the concerned authorities. Instead, volunteers have been relying on makeshift rafts to navigate the strong currents while searching for the missing girl. It is also disheartening to note that the minor girl was swept away after she accidentally stepped into a roadside drain (nullah) that was submerged under floodwater, making it impossible to distinguish from the footpath. The incident has exposed serious shortcomings in civic management and infrastructure maintenance. CONDOLENCE MESSAGE With profound grief and deep sorrow, we extend our heartfelt condolences on the martyrdom of Jangkhongam @ Romeo Hangshing, beloved son of Mr. Lungkho Sei Hangshing and Mrs. Mengshi Hangshing of Lhouthang Village, IT Road, Tamenglong District, Manipur. Jangkhongam laid down his life while courageously defending his ancestral land, village, and people. He was brutally killed while standing guard to protect his community during attacks carried out by NSCN-IM, ZUF Kamson Group, Arambai Tenggol, Myanmar Meitei militants, Shanni National Army, and junta military forces crossing through the India-Myanmar border region and targeting Kuki ancestral villages. We strongly condemn this heinous and cold-blooded killing. The murder of a man defending his own people and ancestral land is an attack on human dignity and justice itself. Such acts of violence can never be justified and must not go unpunished. His sacrifice will forever remain in the hearts of the Kuki-Zo people. He gave his life so that his people could live with dignity, security, and freedom. His bravery, commitment, and selfless service will continue to inspire future generations. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family during this painful time and pray that God grants them strength and comfort to endure this immense loss. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
