Whether you support independence or not from a political standpoint - this ruling is a devastating indictment of UK ‘democracy’. If an ‘equal partner’ in a ‘voluntary union’ cannot choose to leave that Union without consent, it is not equal. Nor is it voluntary. #Yes

@kellylgiven Maybe you could have an annual referendum day, where you can check every year to see if people still want to be in the UK? I mean, they did when they were asked democratically in 2014, but that was such a long time ago.

@kellylgiven Nonsense. Name one democracy in the world that gives constituent parts a legal route to unilateral secession. By your definition, Italy isn't a democracy. Or Germany. Or Canada. Or the USA.

@kellylgiven If England chose to leave the union who gives permission? Scotland, Wales and NI are essentially colonies subjugated by the English. This surely needs addressed. #NotAUnionOfEquals

@kellylgiven It’s one country Kelly. We had a vote on it and the losers won’t accept the result. It really is as simple as that

@kellylgiven No it's not - it's playing by the agreed rules not responding to every passing political whim of desperate rogues and liars.

@kellylgiven We had a referendum which was campaigned as one opportunity. This is not a case of keep going until you get the answer you want.

@kellylgiven How can you be a partner of something that is a whole? Could your arm or leg seek independence from the rest of your body because that is what you are suggesting.

@kellylgiven So this equal partnership only works if 'Scotland' or more accurately the SNP get court decisions in their favour. The citizens of the United Kingdom are equal one vote each.

@kellylgiven Why? Isn't Britain the "demos"? Have you read the 1707 act? It's a damn sight clearer and more unambiguous than the foundation of most other states.

@kellylgiven People seem to forget that we had a independence referendum only 8 years ago. Scotland said no and people need to grow up and accept it. This is not a typical election where we vote who we want as pm every 4 years

@kellylgiven My vote counts the same as one cast in London, so there is the equal case proven. Now, as for the voluntary question, I give you this:

@kellylgiven It’s not equal given the differences in scale of the population and a host of other measurements but Scotland does have more benefits per head than England.

@kellylgiven The SNP has said that the next UK general election will be a referendum on independence for Scotland. We shall see what happens in that election.

@kellylgiven But the equal partner didn’t choose to leave. The equal partner was granted a referendum in 2014 where it was allowed to phrase the question and determine who was entitled to vote. The vote was remain. The equal partner spoke. Inconvenient for you and Nicola, but a fact!

@kellylgiven Can you show me any documents stating that Scotland as a country is an “equal partner” or that membership of the UK would be something that could be opted out of 315yrs later?

@kellylgiven This is the protection of Scottish democracy. We had a referendum with an overwhelming vote to remain only a few years ago - promised to be once in a generation. Only 29% of Scots want sturgeon’s referendum next year. Polls have barely moved since 2014.
