40% of rural hospitals in the US are operating at a loss, and closures are more likely in the South. Yet MAGA Republicans backed the “Big Ugly Law” that further erodes health care. I introduced the State Offices of Rural Health Program Reauthorization Act to strengthen rural health care and ensure that those in rural communities can access the care they deserve.

Republicans refuse to do their jobs and negotiate DHS funding. Our federal workers and the safety of our communities shouldn't have to suffer because of that. Republicans estimate that Trump’s illegal war is costing taxpayers over $2 billion a day, yet there’s been no progress to lower the cost of living for American families… The war in Iran is driving prices even higher here at home. Gas is now nearly 80 cents more per gallon than it was just last month, on top of energy and utility costs that were already squeezing working families. The American people shouldn’t have to suffer for Trump’s reckless decisions.

Today we celebrated the life of Dorothy Provost — a woman of extraordinary strength who stood up for her daughter’s dignity and education. Her courage helped shape the civil rights story of New Orleans and our nation. As we say goodbye, may we honor her legacy by continuing the fight for justice and opportunity for all.

It was an honor to join @XULApres, historian Vincent Barraza, and Tim Francis for a panel at the @NOLAbookfest celebrating the centennial of @XULA1925. We reflected on the story captured in “A Century of Faith, Education and Service: The Xavier University of Louisiana Story,” the lasting impact of Dr. Norman C. Francis on our school, and the vision of St. Katharine Drexel that generations of students, alumni, faculty, and supporters have carried forward for 100 years.

I am horrified by the antisemitic attack at Temple Israel in Michigan, one of the largest synagogues in the country. Acts of hatred directed at people because of their faith have NO place in our nation. We must fight against antisemitism and ALL forms of hatred and violence, wherever and whenever we see them.

Big news, Algiers: we’re getting a new pool!  Today, we broke ground on the Algiers Indoor Covered Swimming Facility, made possible by $4 million in federal funding that I secured. Yesterday, Manning Family Children’s was proud to join @RepTroyCarter, @UnitedWaySELA, the @nolahealthdept, and many community partners to celebrate $1,031,000 in federal funding to expand the Safe Children Initiative across Southeast Louisiana. This investment will allow United Way of Southeast Louisiana and Manning Family Children’s to distribute more than 5,000 free biometric gun safes to families throughout the region while providing secure firearm storage education to every participating household. This important funding secured by Congressman Carter will help sustain and expand our gun safety program at Manning Family Children’s, which to date has provided more than 3,500 biometric gun safes across our community, helping to keep guns securely stored and out of the hands of kids. @StateDept has authorized $40 million in emergency funds for evacuation charter flights to help Americans leave the Middle East. I sent a letter to @SecRubio demanding action, and I’m glad to see steps are finally being taken. Americans should never have been put at risk by Trump’s illegal and unilateral war without a clear plan to get them to safety.

Across the country and in Louisiana, firearms remain the leading cause of death for children and teens. Too often, these tragedies occur because a child gains access to a firearm that wasn’t securely stored.
