To humanize that experience is not an added gesture; it is the work. Ensuring that parents encounter the process in its most supportive form is our primary obligation. Yes, tensions will surface. Emotions will rise. But what must remain constant is the school’s unwavering support when understanding falters or acceptance feels out of reach. Grace, then, is not stylistic—it is a professional duty, an ethical posture, an institutional responsibility. It should, in truth, be regarded as an honor. I speak both as a parent of a child with a disability and as a professional who has worked alongside extraordinary parents and children. To stand within and outside that experience has leavened —and continues to refine—my understanding. Finally, whatever parents are navigating, do not let their concerns simmer and percolate into something more volatile. It is a difficult position to occupy. Triage their hardship. Respond with urgency. Ground them in assurance and confidence that you are alongside them. Serve—deliberately, consistently, and without hesitation. Yes, serve. If you’re not willing to put yourself in that servanthood position, regardless of your title, position and degree, you do not belong in special education. Instead, go sell timeshares.
