Pretext gives a massive performance boost for client-side pagination. An entire novel can be paginated on-the fly (with previews for each page) in 2-3ms per run vs 100ms+ for DOM Very cool and very responsive demo at pretext-stuff.solarise.dev/pagination.html (I think this is a fair comparison - there might be additional optimisations possible for the DOM approach, but can't escape the reflow trap)

@Rahatcodes 👋 This is one of the signals we use to figure out if people are having a good experience. We put it on a dashboard and call it the “fucks” chart

@SlackHQ ... what now? Your changes to whatever pops up when someone huddles you means that if I'm typing it can all of a sudden throw me into the huddle without warning. Who the %#$& is testing this? Me? Is it me who's testing it? Has @salesforce just decided to burn it down?

for a little toy project i reproduced the quoted artificial life paper: a 2D grid of randomly generated Brainfuck programs breed and spontaneously evolve self-replicators, despite no explicit optimization functions
Ryan Greene@rabrg

i mean this literally. given an infinite universe where self-replicating (sustaining) is possible; after enough time, it is *inevitable*, and once created, entropy will destroy all else: the universe becomes more and more selective for the self-replicating

@JShodanVR I agree with the space problems. But the biggest problem I think is that a lot of people just don't want to spend time so disconnected from reality.

I don’t understand. This stuff is real, it exists, you can actually buy it, and yet the VR market is almost dead. What happened to the kids in the 90s who dreamed about this possibility? Why do modern kids now go crazy for games where you don’t really do anything, where at most you just swipe up and down, or spend their time screaming in stupid games that require no concentration, like amoebas with no curiosity? This stuff finally f***ing exists, and yet the videogame market pretends it’s invisible. F***! F***! F***! In 1998, when we were 13 playing Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation with my friends, we would have killed to be able to play something like this. Most people associate the name Jordan Mechner with Prince of Persia - and that's perfectly fine. But what sometimes gets lost in that conversation is his very first published game: Karateka, from 1984. It was Karateka that pioneered rotoscoped animation in video games. Not only did he introduce an entirely new technique, but he did so while still a student at Yale and solo-developing on the game for two whole years. Karateka also introduced wordless storytelling. Simply through cutscenes and gameplay, the story unfolded before your eyes. Not a single word was spoken. So while Prince of Persia will forever be his most famous game, Karateka remains his most important one.

The chalk fairies paid a visit to the OAI offices last night. They left a giant "red line" perimeter around the entirety of the OAI building as well as some other messages for technical staff to read on their morning commute. More examples below 🧵

@MarcJBrooker Is there a guaranteed encoding - ascii, utf8, utf32, EBCDIC, Morse Code? Is it a single language? How accurate do you need?

@MarcJBrooker I'd just count a small % of data throughout file. At least if it's a human language. If it's English I'd just count spaces. If it's something like Japanese or Chinese ... actually I'd have to ask someone. Japanese possibly just chars / 2.2 ? All close enough.

@sama Why would you call it the "Department of War" (DoW)? Isn't the official name is "Department of Defence" (DoD)?

We do not think Anthropic should be designated as a supply chain risk and we’ve made our position on this clear to the Department of War.

Yesterday we reached an agreement with the Department of War for deploying advanced AI systems in classified environments, which we requested they make available to all AI companies. We think our deployment has more guardrails than any previous agreement for classified AI deployments, including Anthropic's. Here's why: openai.com/index/our-agre…
