Dawe and a colleague were interrogated intensely. They insisted they knew nothing about any military operation. The real explanation came years later. Dawe had a habit of calling sixth-form boys into his study to suggest words for the grid, then writing clues around them. One of those boys, 14-year-old Ronald French, had been hanging around nearby American and Canadian troops preparing for D-Day. Security around the camp was surprisingly lax, and the soldiers chatted openly. Ronald picked up the codewords and casually suggested them as “interesting new words” for the puzzles. Dawe used them without realising their significance. MI5 eventually cleared everyone of espionage. The invasion went ahead on 6 June as planned. The Germans apparently never noticed the crosswords.

It is positioned so that any Iranian response to American strikes automatically becomes an attack on American forces, triggering the full unrestrained weight of US military response without a single additional political decision required. If the campaign goes longer than planned, if munitions run thin in 7 to 10 days, if allies hesitate, the Ford’s position ensures that Iranian retaliation does the political work Washington cannot do alone: it transforms a limited American strike into an act of self-defense that no ally can refuse to support. Predictably, the Guardian is stoking the outrage machine over a Bristol school cancelling a visit by local Labour MP Damien Egan. Like other media, the paper is duping readers by suggesting this is evidence of "antisemitism". Egan is Jewish. In fact, the cancellation has nothing to do with Egan's Jewishness. The visit was called off after mounting complaints from Bristol teachers and parents, who oppose genocide and don't want impressionable young minds exposed to someone who defends a state committing the ultimate crime against humanity. In other words, unlike the Labour party and media like the Guardian, Bristol teachers and parents actually have a moral backbone. Bristol constituents know much more than Guardian readers about Egan, thanks to their independent local paper the Bristol Cable. Egan is vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel – that's the same Israel currently committing genocide in Gaza. He went on an Israeli-sponsored visit to Israel shortly after the genocide began. And he has taken money from major pro-Israel lobbyists like Trevor Chinn. Steve Reed, the communities secretary who made the matter public, threatened that those behind the cancellation "will be held to account" and that "you cannot have people with those kinds of attitudes teaching our children". No, those are exactly the kind of people Bristolians want teaching their children: those who understand that genocide is unequivocally wrong. Egan is not being rebuffed because he's Jewish.
