Dear Northern Governors, You're leading probably the most important region in Nigeria; in terms of providing food to the nation & with the highest population. At the same time, the most abandoned region that is performing terribly in all indices of growth & development. This isn't the work of the federal govt to do. It is your individual efforts that will pick your people from the abyss of penury & under development as we see today. Few years back, the @nnpclimited announced the discovery of significant gas reserves alongside crude oil in the Kolmani River II Well, located in the Gongola Basin within the Upper Benue Trough of northeastern Nigeria. The reserves are estimated to be over 500 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas, with potential to rise further as exploration activities continue. A serious region would, while pressuring the central govt to ensure timely conclusion, swing into action in their own & invite investors that will come & pick up from there. There are both local & international players that would be interested in such projects if only we are serious with the growth of the region. Far beyond this, the areas of Maru, Anka, Gusau in Zamfara; Yauri in Kebbi, Wushishi in Niger State are all proven large deposits of Gold. Unfortunately, we have seen how bandits have taken over those areas. Tin, Columbite, Lead & Zinc have been found in large commercial quantities in Wamba, Keana , Awe & Keffi of Nassarawa state, and even in Alƙaleri of Bauchi state. Limestone has its highest deposits in Obajana, Lokoja in Kogi, Ashaka in Gombe & Kalambaina in Sokoto State. Or is it Gypsum, Coal, Kaolin, Tantalite? The states of Kaduna, Nassarawa, Kano and Kogi still have huge deposits. Let's talk about our arable land that can be out into commercial farming! With a vast expanses of arable land, estimated to cover over 30 million hectares, which can be effectively utilized for commercial farming. This region's diverse agro-ecological zones, from the Guinea savanna to the semi-arid Sahel, offer opportunities for cultivating crops like rice, maize, sorghum, wheat, groundnut, and cotton, as well as for livestock farming. If we can genuinely utilise this opportunity alone, we will feed not just Nigeria, but Africa as a whole & we will stand on our legs and call the shot anytime, any day. Can't we come together as a people, concentrate our energy on the obvious challenges bedevilling the region & harness the juices God Has blessed us with? We have the land, we have the numbers, we have the brains, we have the resources, the. What are we waiting for?
