An elected American mayor just pleaded guilty to secretly spreading Chinese government propaganda to the community she was supposed to represent. She was mayor of Arcadia, California. She resigned today. Eileen Wang, 58, mayor of Arcadia, a city of 55,000 people about 15 miles northeast of Los Angeles, agreed to plead guilty to acting as an unregistered agent of the People's Republic of China. Court documents unsealed Monday show that between 2020 and 2022, Wang and her then-fiancé Yaoning "Mike" Sun operated a website called US News Center, presented to the local Chinese American community as a standard news source. In reality, PRC government officials were sending pre-written articles and directives through WeChat, and Wang was posting them without disclosing their origin. Sun is already serving four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the same charge in October 2025. Court records also show that PRC officials coordinated with Sun to help elect Wang to the Arcadia City Council in the first place. Wang faces up to 10 years in prison. She appeared in federal court in Los Angeles today and is expected to formally plead guilty in the coming weeks. She resigned from the city council on the same day the charges were unsealed. FBI Los Angeles Assistant Director Patrick Grandy put it plainly: "All Americans should be alarmed to learn an elected official was brazenly spreading propaganda on behalf of the Chinese government." This is not a federal agency or a think tank. This is a city council in suburban Los Angeles. The CCP's influence operations do not only target senators and congressional staffers.
