This is correct: the UK is poorer than Mississippi, looking at GDP per capita (nominal). However, I suspect most people are interested in cities rather than hinterlands. The OECD gives GDP per capita (PPP) for urban and metro areas. This shows a different story. Here are selected areas (y=2022, in 2020 USD): Camden and City of London $874k (!!!) Westminster $634k District of Columbia $219k Dublin $192k Paris $174k München $173k Frankfurt $138k Luxembourg $128k Copenhagen $120k San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA $117k Warsaw $110k Prague $106k Geneva $104k Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia, WA $98k Greater London $94k New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA $93k Zurich $91k Île-de-France $88k California $83k Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach, FL $68k UK: $54k Mississippi: $43k (below the UK here in PPP) Yes, there are issues with PPP. Also, I assume they apply country-wide PPP to local areas, which is weird. It would be good to have nominal figures as well. Still, European big cities are extremely wealthy and on par with their US counterparts.

This chart makes me laugh every time I see it. The UK, France and Italy are poorer than the poorest US state, Mississippi. Canada and Germany are poorer than the second-poorest US state. The gap will widen. And don’t come with “free healthcare.” You pay for it with absurd taxes

If the AI-pilled people are right and soon we'll no longer have to work because machines will replace us, France will become the hottest place on earth, because the quality of life is second to none if you don't have to worry about resources. But eventually the machines will start thinking "how come humans get to chill on a Parisian terrace while drinking wine and eating charcuterie but we don't" and this will be the beginning of the end for the human race.

Let me explain Dallas(s) 1. The summers are unbearable and this cannot be understood without moving there. You can't just visit Texas for 3 weeks in peak summer and understand it, because that's not why it's bad. It's bad because it's late October and it's 90+ and you're questioning your sanity as to whether not it will ever end. 2. Dallas' culture, superficially seems good, but once you dig down... 3. Dallas living is about the airport. You save money in Dallas and then fly out all the time because being in Dallas is rough. Airline travel in the US has declined a lot, so this way of life works less well. 4. The driving. It's dangerous. You need a tank and you're going to be sitting in it all the time. Dallas sort of seems like a city but it's not really. It's more like an area. 5. You can trade 3% state income tax for better weather, more trees, and fewer problems. I think Dallas is a solid place to live in a bigger house with A/C and grind for money aggressively for a short period of time and then move out of. Other than that, unless you are tied down there (job, family), I can't recommend it.
Amy Nixon@texasrunnerDFW

I am astounded by the number of millennial families who moved to Dallas, bought a home, then turned around and sold the home to move out of Dallas, in less than a 5 year time span Is Dallas just super transient or is this a post-pandemic phenomenon happening everywhere?

In 2012, Peak Games cofounder Sidar Sahin told the WSJ: “I want a Peak Games mafia.” Peak was acquired by Zynga for $1.85 billion in 2020. Today, more than 65 companies in Turkey trace their lineage back to Peak. Turkey now represents ~4% of the global gaming market.

“How Istanbul Won the Mobile Puzzle Wars” is now live on all platforms. @mitchlasky and @blakeir discuss how one city came to produce 4% of global gaming revenue, and whether the moat behind it is durable or just a set of compounding arbitrages.

As a kid, I remember being depressed about global desertification and the depletion of fresh water (which accounts for only 2.5% of the planet's water resources, my Greenpeace magazine told me). I distinctly remember reading about desalination for the first time: just turn seawater into fresh water, problem solved. It was an eye-watering moment of awakening. What the hell—why hadn’t any environmentalist NGO ever told me this? With human ingenuity, resources are never finite. The only thing standing between us and infinity, as @DavidDeutschOxf taught me years later, is better knowledge. wsj.com/us-news/climat…
