Radio frequency identification (RFID) has been applied successfully in several industries, including manufacturing, supply chain, agriculture, transportation, retail, and logistics. The new and novel uses of RFID technology are continually increasing in healthcare systems. However, implementation in healthcare has not followed the expanded uses of this technology. Key considerations for implementation include the impact on efficiency, safety, visibility, transparency, quality, and costs versus benefits. These can be difficult to understand without knowledge of specific use cases. ASHP's Standardize 4 Safety is the first national, interprofessional initiative to standardize medication concentrations and reduce errors. Through this initiative, ASHP has collaborated with experts in pharmacy, nursing, and medicine to develop publicly available lists of standardized concentrations of adult and pediatric continuous infusions, compounded oral liquids, and patient-controlled anesthesia and epidural medications. Work is underway on a national standard for intermittent infusions. The project's goal is to improve medication safety in patients of all ages throughout the continuum of care. Patients taking immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are seen throughout all practice settings due to their impact on cancer survival and indications throughout many cancer types. ICIs have the potential to cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which can be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This activity will discuss early identification and management irAEs to prevent progression leading to severe adverse effects and to avoid interruptions in life-prolonging ICI therapy. It is imperative that physicians, pharmacists, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and nurses apply evidence-based guideline recommendations to patient-specific care plans to improve overall patient outcomes. U.S. healthcare generates more than six million tons of solid waste each year, with plastics accounting for up to a quarter of that total. Although ASHP has existing policy on carbon emissions, we do not yet have a policy focused specifically on environmental health as it relates to waste. Enter Council on Pharmacy Practice, which has drafted a policy titled, “Promoting Environmental Sustainability in Healthcare.” The policy recognizes the importance of sustainability in protecting public health, encourages environmentally conscious clinical and operational practices, supports legislation and regulation that enable waste minimization in medication use practices, and calls on the pharmacy workforce to seek out opportunities that advance environmental stewardship.
