The definition of a bubble is asset prices rising with no relationship to their fundamentals. Multiple tranched financing rounds closed over the last few weeks where the second tranche is at a meaningfully higher valuation than the first. In most cases, the investors blend their capital and ownership, so it doesn’t affect them. The rationale is that the company can now issue larger equity dollar packages to compete for talent with OAI, Anthropic etc. Prospective hires should beware.

Today @tryramp announced a fundraise at a $16b billion valuation. My partnership with @eglyman, @karimatiyeh and Ramp dates back to 2019 when I met Eric in a NYC coffee shop the morning after he incorporated the company. By the end of the day, I had committed to investing. It was my first seed investment. Eric and Karim had previously built and sold their first company, Paribus to Capital One. It was there they learned the ins and outs of building a credit card company. Eric and Karim had a simple, but unique insight that was wildly under appreciated that corporate cards were about software, not plastic, and the value proposition to companies was about savings & efficiency not rewards. The conventional wisdom at the time was that Brex had won the market, and there was no opportunity for a new entrant, despite the fact Brex had <1% market share in the US. This missed the point. Huge markets in financial services create multiple winners, and spend management (and broadly the digitization of B2B spend and shift from ach to cards virtual and otherwise) was in its infancy in 2019. If anything, Brex had done the hard work of educating the market of the reasons to shift off AmEx, creating a second mover advantage for Ramp to innovate on in terms of product and GTM. As it often is with the best companies, every early round was “expensive”. But great teams going after great markets create magic. We were the 2nd largest check in the seed and Series A (both pre revenue), and co-led the series B, all less than 2 years after incorporation.
