🗣️15 years ago today, our APL Concept 1 was Banned by the @NBA for providing the wearer with an undue competitive advantage over their opponents. At the time, @RyanGoldston and I were working out of a 60 square foot office, we had 9 months of inventory on-hand and had been shipping the most innovative shoe ever created to customers for less than 5 months. To say we were unprepared for this life changing moment would be dramatically underselling how life altering and monumental this moment would become. Like anything, you never know what you’re capable of until you are tested, and at that moment, this was the greatest test we had ever been presented and since we leaned into it and made the most of it, to this day it remains the greatest opportunity we ever maximized. Since that day, we’ve grown more than 100x, became the world leaders in luxury performance, built the most beautiful stores, partnered with World Champions, had a day declared for us in our hometown of Los Angeles; but it really all started on October 19th when the APL Concept 1 became the first and only shoe since that was banned by the NBA for performance enhancement reasons. I remember Ryan and I sitting in our tiny office the day it got announced in utter disbelief as it became the #1 news story in the world and the 2, 3 and 17 most googled terms that day. The other part that surprises me in reflection is we documented so much of this part of our story, but that will be saved for the documentary one day. The journey we’ve been on the last 15 years is one that’s been filled with tests, triumphs, excitement, challenges, discovery, focus, resilience, fortitude, joy, innovation, grit, relentlessness, relationships, creativity, vision, belief and accomplishment. I value reflection because sometimes it’s hard to see how special a moment is until it’s passed, but I’ve always said that someone is going to live our dreams, so it might as well be us.
