In a remote part of western China, the local police were sick of thieves bribing or poisoning their guard dogs to break into stations at night. So they tried something different. They bought a flock of geese.
It worked almost immediately. One guy poisoned the dog, climbed the wall to steal back his confiscated motorbike, and ran into 20 honking geese flapping at him in the dark. He froze. The whole station woke up. He was caught on the spot. The local chief told reporters geese are basically better than dogs. They have sharper hearing, they can’t be drugged with a piece of meat, and you can’t quiet them down once they start.
Honestly, anyone who’s been chased by a goose probably agrees. They’re terrifying. The Romans used them to guard the Capitoline Hill back in 390 BCE, and apparently it was the geese, not the watchdogs, that caught a sneak attack one night and saved the city. Today there’s a flock of 500 geese on the China-Vietnam border, working alongside dogs. A Scottish whisky distillery used a goose squad to guard its warehouses for decades. Free-range chicken farms in the US still use them.
So the real question is whether your local police station would be safer with a Doberman or with eight angry geese.

One friend in chemical manufacturing told me recently that he has finally achieved his goal of selling 100% of his output abroad (Europe and the Middle East), which he had been trying to do because it was impossible to sell domestically except at a loss.

I've now visited three provinces and two municipalities in China, and based on what I've seen, there's no clear gap in quality of life between the West and China. Some things are generally better in the West: air quality, real wages, work-life balance. Some things are generally better in China: infrastructure, urban modernity, safety. Overall, the gap that many Westerners assume exists has largely closed.

@AkaiRed025 Wonsan is also not bad. The point is those tourists takes are just stupid. In each of those tier cities there are enough ppl who can barely make ends meets, let alone in the countryside. Foreigners as well as elite urban populations are insulated from these.

People typically enter menopause between 45 and 55. Whether or not having a kid at that age or older is a good idea is an entirely different question

I interviewed a senior dev today. He wanted a $250k salary. I gave him a complex system design task. He had 30 minutes. He started drawing diagrams on the board and talking about scalability. I just opened a prompt. I fed it the requirements. I had the full boilerplate and unit tests in 15 seconds. I turned the monitor around. I asked him: Why would I pay you $250k when I just did your month's work for 2 cents? He didn't even answer. He just packed his bag and walked out. If you can’t outperform an API, you aren't an engineer. You’re just an expensive liability.
