#Juneau, AK: This week, we’re joining @SBAgov, @AlaskaDHSEM, @cbjuneau, and @tlingithaida to assess damages from the Aug. 5-6 Mendenhall Glacier Flooding. Teams will be in the community for the remainder of the week. Here’s a few things to know about our visits: ⬇️

Governor Dunleavy underwent a procedure this afternoon to address recently detected basal cell carcinoma. The Governor is expected to make a full recovery.

@historyinmemes In Alaska we have some of the most brilliant and dedicated scientists who provide critical weather, flood, tsunami, and volcano alert and warning. They are truly heroes.

David A. Johnston was an American seismologist who detected volcanic activity in Mount St. Helens, Washington, and advised the evacuation of residents. Locals moved 15 kilometers away from the mountain. Due to wrong estimates David set his camp atop a nearby hill, 8 kilometers from the zone. His intention was to record the eruption on camera. The eruption happened not in the direction he had calculated, in his initial measurement he thought it was going to be a classical upward volcanic eruption; but he was wrong. The volcano erupted not upwards but sideways. He only managed to shout "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" on a live radio broadcast before he lost his life. Below is his last photo taken by his colleagues before they left the camp on the eve of the eruption. This photo was taken 13 hours before his death on May 17, 1980.

@GovDunleavy amended his Sept. 17 disaster declaration for Typhoon Merbok to include the Pribilof Island REAA. The Gov's amendment activates AK Individual Assistance to help repair damages. Those with storm damages can now apply at ready.alaska.gov or call 844-445-7131.

Alaska is home to more than 40 percent of the nation's tribes, and indigenous peoples make up about 20 percent of our state's total population. Beyond just statistics and more importantly, they represent our friends, neighbors, family, and communities. Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay

I thank the President for listening to @SenDanSullivan, @Rep_Peltola, @GovDunleavy, and me, and approving our request for a 100% waiver of the State’s cost share for federal assistance associated with recovery efforts from the Western Alaska disaster.

I am glad to see that the Biden Administration has honored our request to waive 100% of the State’s cost share for additional disaster assistance. Alaska’s Congressional Delegation and I know the waiver will go a long way in helping repair the damage to these communities.
