“People worry that computers will get too smart and take over the world, but the real problem is that they’re too stupid and they’ve already taken over the world.”
Marcelo P. Lima@MarceloLima

Machine learning, which is basically matrix algebra run recursively over huge data sets, turns out to be incredibly brittle and can be gamed (hacked) quite easily with noise invisible to humans--great explainer by @MelMitchell1 nytimes.com/2018/11/05/opi…

@fredlambert @elonmusk Funny that when Musk was calling a man who rescued kids from the Thai cave a "pedo" to his millions of followers (an unsubstantiated claim proven wrong), he was and remained your hero. His character is and has always been of a bully and a lier with huge ego and very thin skin.

Don't get me wrong, I think @elonmusk is really funny at times, but calling people "chicken" and talking about "teabagging" them is something that a 14-year-old would find funny. It's not his usual humor. I do believe that something is going on. Also, it's not just humor. There are technically insults. For someone that talks about "love is the answer" and "be kind", this is just not it. Furtermore, it gives the green light to his millions of fans to use this platform to send similar petty insults to people, which I got an unhealthy dose of yesterday. This platform could be incredible. We get to share ideas, educate, share laughter with people around the world. I don't have a lot of respect for people who decide to use it as an efficient way to call people names. That includes Elon.
Fred Lambert@FredLambert

Elon fans keep sweeping all his questionable behaviors and petty insults under the "he is just joking" rug. That rug is so screwed now that they can't get a strong footing on the truth.

Elon's amazing at managing expectations. How do you get people to simultaneously believe that A) just getting off the pad in mid-April is a success, and B) the very same ship is going to take paying customers around the moon in the next eight months. Teach me this skill!

It was a once in a lifetime pandemic. Of course mistakes were going to be made. Of course. But to believe the scientists & health care officials all purposely tried to fuck with our lives is crazy. They did their best to help us thru something none of us had ever lived thru b4.

@GuyDealership Why wouldn't the brand worry about reputational damage with the customer by refusing to honor warranty? I'd split it, but only as a gesture of goodwill. You are just a messenger, the brand is the decision maker.

What would you do in this situation? Customer bought a car from us. Drove it only 6,000+ miles... And suddenly, the engine went bad. We asked the customer to bring it in so we could check the engine. It was filled with pieces of metal (this wasn't the case when we sold the car). We put in a warranty claim on behalf of the customer. It got denied. Warranty company claimed the customer replaced a component in the car and that caused the issue. We checked all of the components — Doubt that anything the customer did could have impacted the engine (but you never know). Now the question... 1) Suck it up and fix it: Spend $5-6K out-of-pocket to replace the engine even though this issue was likely caused by some form of (unprovable) negligence by the customer, or... 2) Turn the customer away: Knowing that they will likely become a brand "hater" - irrespective of the fact that we held up our end of the bargain - and that there is a chance this wasn't their fault. What would you do?

@calebrhogg @GuyDealership we bought our 2011 RAV 4 with 30K miles from Hertz in 2012, paid $14K. Sold it for 10K - 10 years and 68K miles later. The only time it needed any major maintenance was a few months before the sale - wear and tear. Bought another two year old RAV, hopefully same experience

Is it not weird that somehow "free speech" has become a "right-wing" cause? I can't be the only progressive person who thinks this. Like, I'm NOT A REPUBLICAN. And yet people somehow think I lean "right" just because I care a lot about free speech. This is disturbing.

So Biden blocks the lawsuit against MBS for the Kashoggi massacre, and MBS offers to increase the production of oil. Really Joe, have we reached a new ethical low. @JoeBiden #SaudiArabia #oil
